I have a 94 ranger xlt 4x4 and i need to do the front brakes but they are asking me if i have a Dana/Spicer 35 axle or Spicer 28 axle and if it has a 3.45 front axle ratio or not. How would i go about finding this out?? Thanks for the help

That stuff does not matter when doing brakes. I used d28 pads on a d35 and that was 5k ago and no problems. You should have a d35, I think it was mid year 1990 that they started putting in d35s.

It will matter when he does rotors. You should have the Dana 35. The easy way to tell is count the bolts holding the 3rd member to the beam. 12 is a Dana 28, 10 is a Dana 35.

A '94 Ranger will ALWAYS use D35 brake parts regardless of having 3.45 gears or not.
If you have (and specify) 3.45 when buying parts, you will get the wrong ('83-'89) parts.
(if you don't know what you have, then just tell them D35 & 3.73 or 3.55)

This has been an ongoing issue with the parts lookup systems at chain stores ever since some braindead dweeb entered that erroneous info into them some 15-17 years ago (or should I say "never bothered to update it". 1990 is the ONLY year such info would matter for brake stuff).

The confusion comes from Ford refering to the D35/28 "Hybred" axle as a D28.

The parts people ASSume that all D28's are the same, when in fact
ALL Rangers made after 11-89 use the D35, though SOME '94-97's
have D28 rotating parts INSIDE the diff pumpkin and the two innermost
shafts.

another common way to get wrong parts is to ask for axle bearings
and seals for an Gen2 or Gen3 Ranger with a 8.8" axle.
For the most part you'll wind up making a second trip to the
auto parts to exchange the 31-spline bearings and seals for
the correct (smaller) 28-spline bearings and seals.

The ASSumption they are making is that the Ranger is a "Truck"
so it must use the same parts as the F-150 or Explorer
(both of which use the 31-spline stuff)

But that's not all...

Napa lists in the computer and books 91-94 4 door explorers as having 1330 series u-joints in the rear drive shaft... no.. it has 1310 series... They list the sports as having 1310 series joints... of course... they also say the 4 doors have 3 joint rear shafts... :annoyed:
