dana 35 axel removal ?????

i have a 1999 ford ranger and i just changed my rear end gears to 4.56,and i am about to do the front axel, now my question is can i pull out my front axel and axel shafts and drive shaft and still drive the truck in two wheel drve. what would it hurt since the truck rides on the torsion bars and not the axel. my wheel bearings are sealed so would this work

Probably not. That type of front axle often helps support the bearing. Without it, the bearing can separate under load.

You CAN, however, remove the front driveshaft and drive around all you want, even with wildly different gears.

you can. i have a 99 and ive done it multiple times. when the time comes to put it back together, clean the splines very good and keep the hubs clean

i've heard bad things about the jeep unit bearings separating without the shaft holding it together. Although i've only heard this. Not sure how similar they are, seem like they would be, being unit bearings

i dont see how the bearings can seperate when the axel shafts are only held in by snap rings its not held together with a axel nut like the 2000 and later

you can run it like that. however, i have a dana 35 out of my 2002 ranger that im getting rid of. it has 4.56 gears already installed in it. it was geared by 4wheel parts and have the reciept. if you want it, just pm me. ill make you a deal.

It's torsion bar. Are you SURE it doesn't have an axle nut?

no it has no axel nut. its a 99 with manual hubs. there is a couple plastic rings and a snap ring thats all that holds the axel through the hub well you also have the locking hub but no axel nut

according to my hanes manuals. the ones with the nut on are the ones with the live axle and no such hub disco.

slingblade is correct, the 98-00 have no axle nut on them, its just a plastic circle clip, yes plastic. The 03+ are live axle and have an actual bolt. Your truck will drive perfectly fine, the axles do not support any of the weight of the vehicle, only the unit bearing does.
