I have a 1995 Ranger with a Hybrid D35, my Passanger Side
Axle Shaft is Trashed.. I want to know if I can Steal that
shaft out of a Gen 1 Exploder... I cant find any 4x4 95-97.

Would a 2nd Gen Exploder Shaft Work??? Also would
Gen 2 D35 Gears swap into my Hybrid D35???

Thank You,
Mike Tech

The hybrid uses a custom center chunk made to accept a D28 carrier and still fit a D35 beam. The pinion is even different from a normal D28, it's longer. The inner most shafts taper down to a 23 spline to work with the D28 carrier, they do after the u-joint use a full D35 shaft. Actually everthing out from there(the inner most u-joint) is D35. So any other shafts including the slip joint can be replaced with shafts and parts from a "true" D35 axle, that's any 91-94 explorer, 90 BII or 90-97 Ranger. Now if it's the inner most shaft, then only a shaft from a hybrid can be used. These were mostly found in 4cyl and even some 3.0 4x4 trucks. The hybrid axle was only used 93-97. You can see why this poses a problem, and why most prefer just to swap the dang thing out and use a true D35 chunk.

Just in case you are wondering, in order to swap a "true" D35 chunk in, you'll need a healthy chunk, the driveshaft, inner most shafts, and a nice weekend. This will make parts that much easier to find.:icon_thumby:

Now if you have a 2.3 truck then you most likely have 4.10 gearing, and if a 3.0 most likely 3.73 or maybe 3.55. A 3.73 or 3.55 chunk will be MUCH easier to find. While a 4.10, not so much. You are limited to 90-92 4cyl. Rangers or truck that just happened to have afterarket 4.10's in them. Either is one hell of a find.

i think that about sums it up. if you have time and $ just swap in a d35 and like ranger44 said, parts will be plentiful next time it breaks.

Did any Gen 1 D35s come with 4.10s in them???
Get a Gen 2 Center Section with 4.10s n Swap
into the Gen 1 Center Section....??

You are confusing the issue with interjecting "Gen1" and "gen2" into this discussion
because when you say "gen 1" I'm not sure if you are asking about a gen1 Ranger
(no such thing as a D35 in one) or gen1 Explorer.

So in this case let's stick to year range.

the 91-94 Explorer, and 1990-97 Ranger

No Gen1 Explorer came with 4.10's.

SOME Gen2 Rangers did, the "hybred" diff wasn't introduced
in the Rangers until the 1993's model year so if you find a
1991-92 Ranger with an "F7" axle code it will be a "real" D35.

Allan, you say lets keep the discussion to a "year range'' but then continue calling them by Gen 1 and Gen 2 lol :tease:

Like Ranger44 said, if the shaft that broke is one that enters within the diff housing, your only choices are to find a shaft from another '93-'97 Ranger hybrid axle, or swap the whole thing for a true D35 and hope you can find that rare non-4.0L '90-'92 4.10 model (or budget for regearing one).

I'd go D35 because if you broke it once, chances are you'll break it again. The tiny 23 spline end is not very strong.
