Cutting down Front driveshaft for d35 swap

hey guys is there a tech article on where to take the measurements from when cutting down the front DS since i swapped in my d35 in my 88 ranger? or could someone tell me how? thanks -Bobby

I have not seen an article out for it, but it doesn't mean one doesn't exist. IF it were me, I'd mark it, cut it, and weld it back up. But I also don't DD or have any use for 4WD on road to worry about vibrations and the such.

Its needs to be shorted about an inch over all.

The proper way is to grind the weld off at the end of the shaft where the tube is welded to the yoke that the u joint goes into. Once the weld is ground off, you knock it out of the tube with a hammer. Cut and inch off the tube, hammer the end back into the tube, square it up and reweld it. Take it to a driveline shop if you don't want any vibrations and have them balance it.

thanks guys...i will grind the weld off and go that route..does the amount you take off differ with the amount of lift the truck has? or is around an inch no matter what?

If you have 4-6" lift, it's possible you may not need to cut it at all, but check that the driveshaft spline doesn't get too close to bottoming out when the suspension is fully up against the bumpstop (should be at least ½" from bottoming out).

it def. need cut i cant even get it to moun to to the pinion on the new d35

Depending on what trans you are using. If you have the FM145 you can use a TK5 shaft. Buddy of mine did the same thing when he swapped the D35 into his 85 B2. He had a front drive shaft from a B2 that had a TK5 transmission. This shaft had the large U-joints in it which are the correct size for the D35 yoke.

and i hear that if you have the a4ld, fm146 or m50d, you can use a front shaft from an fm145 truck. i havent done it yet, but if someone wants to donate a d35 to me (with 4.10 gears) i'll check it out and let you know if it works!!
