Cummins turbo on 4.0

To you that say it wouldnt work on a 4.0, are you just ignoring what we are saying about the 2.3's? The 2.3 is a small engine, torquey compared to most four cylinders, with a fairly restrictive head. That is very similar to the 4.0's. The only difference is that holsets like lots of boost, something the 2.3T can handle without sweating, but something a 4.0 might not like. However holsets do work at lower boost pressures, and Im sure a 4.0 would have not problem spooling at least an HY35 up in the 2k-2.5k range.

holset maps are hard to come by. Most diesel turbos have smallish turbine housings for fast spool up as a diesel engine is geared torwards low rpm torque rather than max hp. I have a small .48 ar T3 on my 4.0 and its still going after 2 years now. Currentlyt still driving it daily.

Very few care exactly what a holset map looks like. I've seen a few and their efficiency range is way better than most Garrett, Turbonetics, or Precision turbos.

The smallish exhaust housings are what allow you to run them on a gas motor of much smaller size. My experience with holsets tells me that an HE351 or HY35 would be an awesome midrange performer on a 4.0, about like my IHI turbo was on my 2.3.

While your 4.0 is working fine with a small t3, there are much better ways to do it, it's definitely not optimal.

its not really optimal but it works just fine in the rpm range i need it. My sploder is a 4x4 not a 2wd street truck and the 4.0 ohv isnt that high of a rever

That holset turbo is not a good turbo at low boost pressures. It really doesn't start to work well untill 20psi+ of boost. My friend puts about 30psi into a 2.0 with one. Just stick with a t3 for a 4.0 unless you want it to explode into a million tiny pieces.

I just got the truck running, It's a 88 2.9 4x4 found a 91 exploder and gutted everthing. ended up having to rebuild the 4.0 and put new heads on it. I think I am going to run it through the winter and get some miles on it before put boost to it. If anyone is rebuilding a 4.0 I noticed that the oil galley coming from the oil pump to the filter is only a 3/8 hole, there is a 1/2 hole in the oil pump, so I drilled it to 7/16. We use to do this with old FE engines (360-390) made a lot of differance in oil pressure. I never checked it before so i don't have a referance on the 4.0 but the more oil the merrier

63'sprint;
I know this is an old thread but did you get a turbo on your 4.0 and how did it turn out if you did?
Thanks,

richard
