I have a 96 Ranger with the on/off cruise control button on the steering wheel the cruise function works fine however the button has a hole in it and was wondering is it possible to go a junk yard and take the top portion of the button (the button comes in 2 halves) off another Ranger and put it on mine? I called the Ford dealer and they said I would have to buy the whole cruise control set up.

get one from the junkyard. you will have to take the entire side. the two buttons are one unit on the left, and the three buttons are one unit on the right.

Do they just pry off with a screwdriver then snap together?

They are super easy to remove. take the airbag module off, it is held on by two or four bolts behind the steering wheel, you will have to remove teh plastic plugs to get to them. (be sure to disconnect the battery and let it sit for a half hour or so before messing with the airbag) and then there are two phillips screws holding each cruise control button assembly (or pod) on the steering wheel. remove the screws and unhook the ribbon cable from the pod. reverse for install.

I picked up a set for less than ten bucks at the Indy Pull A Part (I have a burned out light in mine)

If you take the pods apart, you will have to remove them from the steering wheel to do so without destroying them.

That is why I recommend just replacing the entire unit, especially since they are so cheap at the Junkyard.
