craziest vehicle recovery...

In the mountains of PA with 4 inches of snow on the ground my uncle slid off the road into a ditch a guy I had recruited who also had a ranger joined forces and hooked a ranger to a ranger and pulled the burban out of the ditch. Talk about teamwork.

Probably about 15 years ago my dad and my uncle were going to pickup some hay in my dad's new to him 1980 F-350 4x4. His first 4x4.

They came apoun a snow drift, it was about up to the hood and about 50' long. Dad said what the heck, locked it in 4x4 and plowed forward, thinking if it didn't work he could always back out of it. It had chewed its way about halfway thru it when it stalled. The dug their way over to the hood to discover snow contoured to the bottom of the hood, the lovely TTB axle had shoveled snow up into the engine compartment and snuffed out the engine. They got it cleaned out and started again, but with their momentum lost they were now stuck. In the days before cell phones my uncle had to walk 2 miles to get his 180 A-C tractor with chains, it didn't blink at pulling out the one ton or breaking the trail to clear the drift, but once the mighty one ton was extracted, it was discovered that the left front wheel had broken thru the ice and was hanging in running water in the road ditch, so it was a good thing it stalled when it did.:shok:

He has been leary of pulling that 4x4 lever ever since, using now only to get himself out of trouble rather than in it farther.

My best "stuck" time

Although i have been stuck a number of times my first one is the most memorible. I was still in H.S. back in the mid 80's when my bud got this old ford 4x4. This thing was a beast in the woods. We decided to go up this mountain road that few even attempted but we where young and dumb and had some beer so off we went. Well a few miles in on this particularly nasty hill he stalled it out,low and behold the starter takes a s--- and we are dead. After a few very choice comments he realizes it is a standard we are on a hill hey we can catch it in gear in reverse if we let it role enough. I found out just how strong a small tree can be as soon as we got one stuck between the bumper and fender and stopped dead. There we where no tools or anything usefull besides beer and smokes , it is like 9 or so pm dark and we are a long way up this road not even a flash light. We build a fire drink some beer and inbetween chop at this tree with some rocks. Eventually the tree starts to crack while i am choppin at it, i scream for him to jump in and get ready which he does but doesnt shut the door. You got it tree lets go truck stars down the hill door flys open gets bent backwards by another tree and the truck gets stuck yet again. After more choice words we crash walk out when it gets light find a house call my parents , who are realy pissed, and head home.Went back walked up to the truck changed the starter and drove away but i will never forget that night.

I'll play

This happened a couple of years ago down near Milwakee. News crew going up the small boat channel leading to the main lake. They were about 1/2 mile at least from the boat landing when they went thru. Paper said they lost $300,000 in electronic gear. The reason they were out there? They were going out to cover the dangers of driving on the ice!

PLease next time post a warning still have coffee coming out my nose

What happened there? Did he hook the strap to the lower control arm, and it ripped right through the rear bunmper when it broke off?

Yesterday I would say is my worst....or craziest

I went wheelin a little bit in a 1993 2WD Isuzu Rodeo with regular stock tires/rims and all the whole thing is stock. We were fine, cept it had JUST poured its a-- off and we went down this hill thats kind of divided...almost all if it is kinda a drop off from where the big trucks would just go over it in 4WD then theres a very narrow spot that I could make it up (one side was a river thing the other was about 2ft drop off into the 4WD area which isnt bad, but dropping off the edge and rolling over is) so we go down the hill which is the easy part, but getting back up...we get stuck....FR Tire is stuck in a rut // FL Tire is kinda okay // RR Tire isnt on the ground and just kinda hanging above the 4wd part // RL Tire is mashed so hard into the ground it wont move...Nobody could pull us up out of it, so I got my friends 4WD Pathfinder which also was totally stock ha but it was good enough....I just kinda put the car in reverse got out and got in my friends truck and rammed the living hell out of it and it fell...and started rolling away as my friend chased it down and jumped in....then I had to make it back up which I did...

Afterwards since it was my parents truck and I wasnt supposed to break it or anything, much less slide off a mountain thing into a stream. So we had to spend $7.00 at the carwash, then run to a friends house and shower and change so no one would find out....then I got home and forget there was like 15lbs of mud IN the car also.....they havent found it yet...

Wasn't too crazy but still a fun recovery. A couple years back my dad drove my brother to school. Well with traffic around the school my dad dropped him off in a nearby neighborhood so he could walk the quarter mile or so to the school. Well my dad decides to try and u-turn on this street to go home. He gets most of the way around but has a wide turning radius. Goes up on the sidewalk but doesn't notice the ditch on the other side of the sidewalk. So he put is 2wd S-10 nose first into a ditch, both rear wheels off the ground, ass suspended in the air. My mom wakes me up to tell me to go recover my dad from the ditch. (I had started off roading by this time so had a little experience with recovery) I grab some chains and jump in my 2wd S-10 Blazer and go pull him out of the ditch. Or rather I pulled him until his tires came back on the ground. Recovery wasn't crazy but the story behind it was pretty funny. Getting woken up on a Monday morning to go pull dad's truck out of a neighborhood ditch.

Worst recovery I was involved in was my buddy's full size Bronco. First time trying out a new mud hole. Well those that know Florida mud know that it can be deceiving. What looks like only a small challenge on the surface can hide something much more sinister below. Well he hit one of these spots and sinks it up to the frame rails. I still had my previously mentioned Blazer and had no chance at that getting him out, though I broke a strap trying. This is also a Wednesday morning (class had let out early so we decided to go muddin, who wouldn't?) so everybody we know is at work or school. Finally after some phone calls he gets a friend to bring out a pool company's F-250 4x4. After 6 hours of shoveling and pulling from the F-250 we finally get it out. Funny thing is that his parents didn't want him offroading so he had to wash the Bronco at my house and I had to lend him a set of clothes so his parents wouldn't get pissed and find out what he was up to. So much mud came out that he had to come back and powerwash my driveway a few weeks later. Ah memories.

one time me and my friend were driving around on these dirt roads in Kawasaki mule that had been converted into 2 wheel drive so they could put a big lift on it and there was this one road that had 2 deep holes in it on both sides from trucks going through it in the mud (leaving a big hump in the middle) and we go down it and some fool in a Toyota Camry tried to go down it and got stuck about 5 feet into the trail...so we tied a rope to each end and barley got the guy out the way he came in...it was hilarious that a 2x4 side x side pulled that guy out. by the way i was like 12 and my friend was 14 at the time

i got one a few days before i killed my rangers tranny. i decied to go night wheeling and to test my new rocklights. i take my friend heather. i ask her to tell me were my front tires are, as im going down these rocks. she says 'oh your good just got stright and slow" as i start to go straight; and i feel the rear end start to lift and tilt towards the left. BAM! tree agenst my door. i clock the wheel slightly to the right and slap theres the frame. forwards no go, reverse...no go. ok time to assess the situation. im hung on the frame. i start useing my hilift on the rear, it isnt workin. i try the right side rear corner....no dice. so i start jacking by my left ext cab window. i put a couple rocks under the left rear tire, i slowly start creeping and kinda get on the skinny pedal. poof! im off, i get on the breaks and start to creep. i feel the rear bumper start to drag. i was gonna get hung up so i let off the breaks more...i ended up tweekin my rear bumper more, smashing my drivers rocker, and door. my friend heathers reaction? "you need to get a damn muffler on your pos ford, when you bounced it off the rev limiter you almost blew my ear drums out." thats all she had to say

I got my left front stuck In a big 4 foot hole covered by the slop at the ranch I was working at, right rear(drive tire) off the ground. We were working on fencing so I took a long 9.5 foot wooden foncepost and shoved it to the bottom of the holw, and used it as a lever, lifting from my front bumper. I pulled down on it with all my weight and the weight of my fellow ranchhand zack, and it lifted it right out and back. Then we drove back to their house for a huge pot of gumbo and many cold beverages after a long day. on the way back out we were pretty "relaxed" and forgot about the hole and hit it again, going fast enough to bounce right over it.
