Same in the US, coins use to be somewhat worth the face value of the metals they were made from. But when those metal prices went up it made more sense to melt the coins down for scrap than to spend them so the government had to step in and make coins from garbage to stop people from doing this.

Way back in the day there was a thing called coin clipping as well. Basically a dollar coin is a dollar coin, So you clip a bit of metal off them and they are still worth a dollar but you now have leftover metal to melt down and sell for more money. Fun fact: this is why coins have ridges on the edges. You could tell if a coin had been clipped or filed by simply looking to see if the ridges were still there.

Somewhere my dad has a collection of old coins and almost all of them are about 3/4 of their original size or less because of how common it was to clip coins.

Just FYI, Isaac Newton, yes the apple on the head guy, introduced ribbed edges on English coins to prevent "clipping" around 1697

That is indeed a fun fact

I don't think that's it.
Coins had lips and or ridges around the outside so you could tell if someone had shaved or cut the edge of the coin to steal some percentage of the precious metal it was made of - but of course these days it's not made of anything valuable anyway.

I was talking about the potato chips.

There is talk that globalization is going to take a hit because of this. Much to the chagrin of some. Countries putting themselves in the position that they are dependent on others was and is a bad idea on many levels. Hopefully, this will wake people up to the fact that countries should be as self sufficient as they can be.

Well, Florida appears to have Cancelled most major events/gatherings!! The NHRA Gainesville races, were cancelled/all television coverage cancelled--PGA, and other included. (not really sorry about the golf!)

I just went to 7-11 for smokes. Big sign on the door saying DO NOT BRING YOUR OWN CUPS/MUGS INTO THE STORE! another big sign at the coffee station. I said to the owner "your gonna have fun tomorrow morning with the coffee", he shook his head and said "I've already been yelling at people constantly since I put the sign up at noon".

I'm half tempted to go there at 7am tomorrow to watch the hilarity ensue as all the cops, construction workers, and truckers line up to try to fill their coffee mugs. :icon_rofl:

Useless attempt at anything honestly.

I 100% agree... I get why they did it, you pour coffee into a personal cup that had your lips on it and that cup touches the pot everyone else uses while you pour. But come on. A. Coffee is suppose to be hot, and B. Who fills their cup by putting the pot directly on the lid where your mouth touches? And C. Just... come on...

Walmart is going to be closing at 11pm to clean the store and restock. This sucks. Now I have to go in to a crowded store instead of running in at night when it's not busy to avoid people.

I feel like there will be a line at the door every morning, and people will be running to the toilet paper isle.

I just stopped at the janitorial supply store. They had plenty of TP. Its in bulk packs of that scratchy one ply stuff you find in the bathroom of a government building... but its there.

All of what you said plus the fact that there's a thousand people's germs all over all the coffee pots, paper cups, lids, stirrers, jugs of cream, individual creamers, sugar container and the individual sugar packets, the espresso machine buttons.. Hopeless endeavour lol.

Glad I live in the boonies... and have my own Keurig.
