coolant issues

Will his heater core leak go away when normal pressure is restored, or is he in for a swap?

dangeranger88 how exactly did you crack your heads by running it too cool?

The heads were cracked before I even bought the truck. The thermo was taken out by the previous owner before he sold it--which caused the engine to run cool after the fact, essentially hiding the problem.

88gt, how did you determine that the thermostat was dead?

no. once blown, a heater core wont "un-blow" itself. he'll need a new one.

LOL... imprecise question, my bad. I know a metal core won't "un-blow" itself, but if there's rubber o-rings/fittings involved in an over-pressure situ, they might re-seat. I'm not clear on the dashboard side of heater core install.

(Considering the vindictiveness of some women, it is good that certain things, once blown, cannot then be un-blown.) :icon_rofl:

the heater core is solid. the coolant lines connect to it on the engine side of the firewall with hose clamps. there arent any seals or o-rings to blow...just the metal heater core.

and i highly doubt his system saw much over the rated cap pressure anyway. any excessive pressure was releaved into the coolant tank by the radiator cap.

well, the temp stayed cold for way too long and when it finally went up it pegged hot and blew my coolant all over the highway ona cold as hell morning. the temp guage had ben fluxuationg for a few days and it came to a head that morning. mostly it is my fault for not keeping up with the coolant level. i let it get to low and the steam that built up in the block destroyed the tempur of the spring and caused it to fail. im currently looking at a head gasket replacement because the thermo wasn't the only problem.
