Cool find at Ollie's (discount/closeout chain)

Saw a Johnny Lightning "project" version of the Ranger on eBay that was painted to look as though it had rust and parts pulled from other ones. This version is identified as an '84. There were also versions packaged with a trailer.

Looks as though Johnny Lightning is going to continue to release new colors and call the model an '85. EBay has venders offering pre-orders for a solid black and a solid copper version with "4x4" graphics.

EBay has examples of the brown and blue ones 85_Ranger mentioned he hadn't run across. I'm happy with what I found at Ollie's.

Kinda funny, on the bottom the trucks are clearly 2wd lol.

Man… now I’m gonna have to start looking for and picking up what I can find of these. Eventually I want to set up my HO model railroad again and these “Matchbox” cars are roughly the correct scale. Slightly oversized, but close enough. Of course, I’ll probably hold back a few of the “collectors” ones in original packaging just because, but any doubles I get will eventually land on the railroad scene

These are 1/64 scale, slightly smaller than matchbox.

I'd appreciate it if you people would stop making me want to spend money 😣

Generally all Matchbox and Hot Wheels are also 1:64 scale, with slight variations on that scale for certain casts. the AutoWorld Brand has a "True 1:64" line with all the details of the real car. There's also a Brand called "Just Trucks" and all they do is Trucks, NO CARS.
Fun Fact : Matchbox and Hot Wheels are both owned by Mattel.

Approximately.

They seem quite a bit different compared to 1/64 johnny lightning and ertl.

Right, "Approxximately"
they dont really call it a 1:65 or 1:63. Generically they are all 1:64 scale.

The RED truck behind the Blue Ranger is a Maisto brand Raptor. The Ertl Ranger is slightly Larger, but roughly the same scale

Here is a 4 Door Bronco by Matchbox (Blue) and a 2 door By HW (Tan). Besides wheels base, they are the same size.

@85_Ranger4x4 , you got me thinking, so i took these pics when i got home from work.

Left - HotWheels Raptor Ranger
Right - Ertl Ranger Sport 4x4
The Ertl is larger by a good bit actually.

Bottom row are all F-150s.
Left to right - HW '09 F-150 4 door, Matchbox '22 Lightning 4 door F-150, HW '16 F-150 4 door, and Maisto '05 Raptor F-150 2 door extra cab.

Each company seems to have their own scale of 1:64, lol.

The rule with Matchbox in particular, back when it was Lesney, used to be that it tried to make all the cars approximately the same physical size. That meant scales varied a lot. A large vehicle would be in a smaller scale than a small car. The scale 1/64 was actually a little larger than Matchbox was actually using on most of its cars.

Tomica/Pocket Cars did the same thing in the 1970s and would have the scale cast on the underside along with the model ID. For trucks and construction vehicles it could be as small as 1/100.

HO scale for model railroads is 1/87. A German company used to make vehicle models in that size that would look correct on a railroad set, but most of these were of European cars that were never sold in the US. 1/64 is larger by comparison, but few will notice on a railroad set.

You need a model railroad set in S scale for the trucks to match scale correctly. So, American Flyer. They're collectible. So, start saving up!

I wonder how close the bigger die cast stuff that’s become popular is to O scale…

This might help.

Except I have no idea what scale those die cast cars are until I go to Tractor Supply or something next and remember to check, lol
