is it as simple as swapping tranny, ecu, making some sort of cooler, and a shifter? is there a difference in the wiring harness? ive got a 1995 ford ranger I DD and play in the mud with every chance I get but the shifter is really sloppy and it barely goes into gears. I realize this could be throwout bearing/pilot bearing/clutch issues but even when in gear the shifter is sloppy. also its hard to shift with a great transmission while going through mud because moment is what its all about. thanks guys!

You are going backwards with the swap. What motor in your ranger? I can make you a heck of a deal on a rebuilt transmission.

The shifter being sloppy has literally nothing to do with the clutch system. Have you tried a simple bushing set for the end of the shifter? Doesn't take long to install and could probably clean up quite a bit of the slop.
