Hey guys, I have a 1998 ford ranger that I swapped in a 5.0 from a 1997 ford explorer and mated it with a M5OD-R2 out of an F-150. I want to get rid of all of the auto transmission and torque converter functions out of the ecu so I don't have codes and the constant fluctuating idle caused by the ecu "searching" for the torque converter and transmission. How would I go about this? Does the SCT tuner work for this? (I don't have a tuner, just an ultragauge I use for telemetrics and reading codes)

It can be done through a SCT Tuner but will require a custom tune. I used a 2001 Mountaineer ECU (model prefix EQE3) in a 99 2wd coil spring Ranger with a 306 and a T5 5 speed. Speedy Dyno in Owensboro KY did a mail order tune for me and worked out all the auto trans codes. Has run great for 166,000 miles.

How much if I may ask did that run you price wise?

I have heard that Speedy Dyno is no longer in business but I have not confirmed that. However, there are several other places that will offer the same options, it just takes a little research. Going from memory I think I paid $495.00 for the SCT Tuner from them and it included five custom tunes. I use four of the five getting my truck dialed in. He disabled PATS, disabled the auto trans functions, disabled the rear O2's, and set up the base tune for my complete package. Then with a couple datalogs supplied by myself via e-mail he continued to improve on the custom tune.

It sounds like a lot of money but if you want the drivability and performance there really isn't a better way around it.

Were all of the tunes included in the price or were they a separate cost from the sct tuner itself? I'm eventually going to pull my motor back out and install a fresh one with a cam, heads and maybe some obx headers, so I will definitely need a tune at some point. My truck leaks oil like a siv right now and I only get like 13 mpg at the very best and about 9 mpg at the worst and I think part of it is tuning.

All five tunes were included with the purchase price. Most SCT Dealers that offer custom tuning will operate in a similar fashion. Just let the custom tuner know everything you can about what pieces you used in your build.
