I am rebuilding a 95 3.0 ranger im not sure what way to put them back in I had them in a box the way they came out but some one nocked the box over my motor manual says only put the hole forward and no hole is in the top of the piston thanks for any help .

If you mix the rods up, the engine may be kinda hard to turn over if you didn't have them re-sized. Some connecting rods have a hole in the top of the large end of the rod. This hole goes up as it supplies oil to the pistons. I haven't seen oil holes in rods for some time, and am not familiar with the 3.0.

In any event, on the crank end of the rod, check the locating tabs for the bearing inserts. These tabs go to the outside of the engine pointing away from the pistons/cylinders.

If the pistons have a groove in one side, the groove goes to the front of the block. Stagger your piston ring gaps. I put the top ring gap to the front over the piston pin, the scraper ring gap to the back 180* from the top ring, and the bottom oil ring to the front with the oil ring rails 45* away from the gap on the spreader. A hint, if you are installing the rings by hand, install the top oil rail, then the bottom. Seems it should be the other way around, but this way works better.shady
