Hello. I have a 1997 xlt with a 2.3. Just wondering about the cmp. Does it do anything after the engine is running? Thanks!

CaMshaft Position sensor? Is that what you're referring to? The ECM uses it for ignition timing. It's always in use.

Can I replace it without pulling off the timing belt cover? I got the bolt out but it doesn't seem to wanna come loose. Did not pry super hard cause I was on my break at work and didn't want to get stranded there longer then I had to.

Haha, seen that the old one has 2 bolts as the new one only has one. Comes right out with them both out. Had a case of the mondays I think.

Glad to see you got it figured out. My current 2.3 doesn't have a cam sensor and I never dealt with it on the newer trucks I had.

1994 Ranger 4.0 camshaft position sensor

1994 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0 push rod camshaft position sensor....bought the truck for 200 bucks and yea it looks rough and runs rough but just wanted a beater to haul trash and firewood...had one of the mechanics at the county shop run the codes and I have repaired and replaced stuff and am down to the last trouble code, camshaft position sensor. Bought a new CPS and when I found the location there is no sensor, no wire, just a round plate bolted down where the CPS and synchronizer belong...if there is no CPS then just how is timing advanced or has the CPS been moved...engine runs awful, rough idle, misses and backfires, cuts off...seem like a timing issue...thanks in advance for any advise !

It doesn't have a c p s. One of the reasons I like the older 4. 0 Rangers No EGR either

It's possible that the truck has had an older engine installed at some point. 1994's should have all had camshaft position sensors - and all of the ones I've seen do have them. Some 93's do as well. 92 and older do not. I think you could potentially remove the block off plate and drop the sensor in, in the correct orientation, assuming the plug for it is present in your wiring harness.

Might try cleaning or swapping out the MAF sensor with a known good one - I fixed an Explorer that ran REALLY bad by just doing that. Backfiring, no power, very little throttle response. Instant improvement.

94 Explorers all had a cam sensor. Only the California Rangers had it. The easy check is EGR or no EGR. The two things go hand in hand.

Check your plug wire order at the coil. It should be

Timing on the older batch-fire 4.0s is done off the crank sensor.
