Noticed this morning that when I press the clutch pedal and hold it down, I get a whine that you can hear slowing to a quiet in about 5 seconds.

From reading I gather it's the pilot bearing, I plan on replacing everything in there, but I have a question.

If the rear main isn't leaking, should I touch it? Same goes with the front tranny seal... I gather that seals are best from Ford, any opinion on TOB and a clutch kit? Are those ok aftermarket?

Personal experience here.

The napa clutch kit is the best "over the counter" clutch you can get. The friction disc is the thickest out of most ive seen.

I prefer exedy clutches. rockauto has them fairly cheap. They last a good long time, are smooth and quiet, and just a tad more durable than stock.

USE FORD PILOT AND THROWOUT BEARINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aftermarket ones will squeek after some time.

Use the best seals you can get your hands on. Whether it be the best ones from auto zone, or from a ford dealership. Reason? Does saving 30.00 really matter if you have to drop the transmission again do to cheap seals?

If the rear main seal is bone dry, meaning not a hint of oil, leave it be. But if it shows even the slightest sign of a drip, replace it now. You'll be thankful later.

Also, drain and replace the transmission fluid in the process. This way everything will be fresh. :icon_thumby:

Thanks for response, i appreciate the personal experience.
I wrote the "never mind" cause I think I figured out the whine...

Yesterday morning I had to pull a maneuver involving reversing from a stop on a steep hill. I think I just cooked the disk a little, and that's what is making the whine. As I didn't notice it till I got to work I was trying to troubleshoot from my desk....

Only whines for 5 seconds (you can here it slowing down) when you push in the pedal to the floor. Pushing in the clutch and just sliding the stick up to 1st stops the noise sooner. So I'm reasonably sure is the disk making some rubbing between the pressure plate and the fly.

Anyway, should be an emergency, I'll probably ride it til it starts slipping

Check the fluid level in the transmission. If its low that will cause the whine as well.

Yeah, that was my first thought. I guess I'm only ruling that out because cause I would expect a constant noise (with pedal pressure) and not one that sounds to be slowing down.

Would your opinion change if I described the noise as a dull grown instead of a whine? I may have picked the wrong adjective.

Man I hate pulling transmissions haha

Well pushing the clutch in stops the input shaft from turning. Only a few things can make a noise. Pilot bearing. Throw out bearing. Or input bearing

My money would be on either the pilot or the throw out.
