Clanking Noise!!!

My truck is making a clanking noise and it sounds like it coming from the transmission area.its not REALLy loud but its noticable.I just noticed it today and its never happened before.its only does it when i let the clutch out because when its pressed in it doesnt do it. The clanking noise seems to be louder when i drive at high rpms in 1,2,litte noise in 3 and absolutley no noise in 4th gear.need help,throw out bearing,or could it just need some fresh tranny fluid?

Check your universal joints on the driveshaft.shady

U-Joins first, then loose bell-housing bolts. Pay attention to the flange on the rear end that holds the u-joint at the rear of the drive shaft.

ok thanks guys but wouldnt u-joints only clank when im driving?this clanks when the truck is sitting at 0mph and running with the clutch out mind you because when i push it in at any speed or rpm it goes away.

OK if with the clutch out and sitting still - it is either the clutch, pressure plate or tranny.
Clutch and pressure plate are usually replaced at the same time. Sorry, but I don't have any good trouble shooting suggestions.

Your original post was misleading. Ford manual transmissions are noisy at idle with the clutch out. It depends on the volume of the noise you are hearing. If it is loud, you have a trans problem, if you kinda have to listen for it, it is normal.shady

yes i appoligize but yes i know they are noisy but like the title implys it is making a clanking noise but i havent drove it for two days scared its gonna blow up so i will find out tommorow.

update:i listened more closely and its a knock coming from the transmission and this is kind of the rythm its in.(knock knock......knock knock......knock knock.......etc)theres a pause in between each time it knocks and it gets louder when i drive in each gear except 4th.
