Choosing an electric fan for a 2000 Ranger.

I like the Taurus idea. I would really like to keep an OE look. What year Taurus should I look for?

Just find one with a V6.

However you would need to do some modifications to fit your Ranger. It will be wider than many others you might find and will not fit in between the radiator hoses. Another issue is that it is has 2 speeds and you cannot power low and high at the same time or it will burn up the motor. The Taurus uses the ECM to control the speed. You could just have the high speed on just don't hook up one of the wires.

I used a Volvo relay setup and a BMW sender on mine.

Many years ago now I had a '77 F100 with a 302 and mounted a V6 Buick fan inside the OEM shroud. Cheapo controller and it worked like a champ!

There are probably hundreds of donors you could consider. Just measure it up and hit a boneyard!

Hey lonesome I just noticed you are not far from where I lived in GA. I used to live just outside of Cleveland on Pink Mountain just a stones throw from the Habersham County line. Sure do miss the place sometimes. Or maybe I just miss that good greasy Southern home style cooking. Anyhow I had to look when you said you have drilled out a few rivets to lube motor bearings. Typical good resourceful mountain guy. Just looked on the map Columbus is a bit farther than I remember LOL.

I am not worried about the haters. I know better.

Some one else told me a Volvo fan would be a good idea as well. Those are in short supply around here though.

90-95 taurus BUT make sure it's the 3.8L and not the 3.0L.
some of the lincoln mark vii's or something had the same fan. :icon_thumby:

should look like this and have 3 wires.

Jeep guys always hook the low side to a thermostat control in the water somewhere and hook the high side on a toggle switch in the dash. of course relays are needed.

I have one of a 119 flex-a-lite mounted as a pusher, they make a 118 that is a puller. With a dual core explorer radiator and a 5.0 it just kept it warm in the heat of summer (as a pusher which isn't as effective as a puller)

It was about the biggest that was practical (depthwise) for my application and really much bigger widthwise and heightwise wouldn't gain much.

I have since added a low profile flexfan on on other side, didn't hear a peep out of the efan unless I let the truck sit idling over this summer.

I have a contoller similar to this one (I thought mine was around $70 though):

Look at the instructions, it would be stupid cheap/easy to make your own.

no.. the 3.0 fans are different, they are decent but no where near as strong
However you would need to do some modifications to fit your Ranger. It will be wider this might be true, I've never tried it with a ranger. If I get my hands on one, I'm gonna make it fit in my B2.than many others you might find and will not fit in between the radiator hoses. wire low side with something like this http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance-Products/555/10560/10002/-1?parentProductId=

and hook up the high side to a toggle (if off-road rig, for slow speed crawling)... OR you can hook the high side trigger to the relay with the AC, but that's probably overkill. Personally I'd just toggle the high side since you'll probably never need it.

love volvo relay setups..

I have been wanting to install an electric fan on my 2000 Ranger with a three liter and five speed. I have looked at several options but before I settle on one I wanted to see if there is a common model that is preferred. I would really like to use an OE fan from another Ford but I would want it to drop in. I like the universal fan and shrouds combos Summit has bit I was hoping to spend less than that. Any ideas on this?

the stock setup works very well. for many it is not a worthwhile modification. for some though its very big in return..

but if you want to go electric

certain dodge, escort, taurus and the small later cougars etc. work well. the taurus is extreme overkill. just look around.

running it off of a t stat is ideal. copy the setup off of, say an 88 mustang 4 cyl...that has worked well for me with solid state relays.

cooling 300 plus hp sbf and my 6.5 diesel has proven to be a non issue...

400 plus hp raptors have electric fans...its not because they dont work.

Forgot about the 3.0...The MK VII fan is even larger, thicker and a bit more powerfull that the Taurus fan. Overkill IMHO:D

Thanks for all the information. I have a couple Mark VIII fan now but they do not fit. I wanted to use one on our F250. But they hit the water pump pully. I like the idea of using a fan out of another Ford becuase I am hoping it wil have Ford stamped on it. Then I will make sure it all looks OE when I am done with it. Biulds like this want to keep an OE look as much as possible. I really like the idea of a two speed fan becuase summers arounf here are brutal. The AC gets a real work out then. I am assuming I will need that. If a single speed fan will do the job then of course I would rather go with that.

I hit a few salvage yards today and found some good stuff. One yard had at least 15 Tauruses but they were all three liters. The guy said I can pull any single fan and all the wiring and relays for $15. I found one in a Lincoln but it was not a Mark VIII. I forgot which model it was but the fan was smaller than the ones I have from Mark VIII’s. I am thinking about grabbing it and hoping it works on something I have.

You could probably make a few bucks reselling the Lincoln fan.....post up some pics and a description of the fan you end up with.

Will do. I am trying to sell a few things so I can go up there with some cash.

I'm probably wrong....but I would think if you had space for a pusher fan AND a puller fan....they would do as well as one large puller-fan.

I tried a couple of dual fans, but none of them fit. So I am going to get a sinlge fan.

This radiator is just two inches too long for a set of real nice fans I found just laying on the top of a car out there.
