94-98.5 12v for reliability = towing, workhorse

P-pumped 24v for power = track truck, sled pulling

Head studded egr/emission's deleted injector replaced 6.0L = Fun daily driver that sounds as unique as a cummins, but with a V8 growl and hauls ass. Oh, and it's not wrapped in a dodge.... King ranch crewcab FTW!

Thanks for the help, I think I'am either going to go for the 7.3L IDI or newer 7.3L. Unless of course I can find a Early 90's cummins with less that 200k miles.

good luck finding a 7.3 IDI with under 200k , and the service life of a Cummins is like 350k miles , so 200k is nothin , a buddy has an 89 12v with 381k on it , all original

Diesel Fords I've owned and driven:
#1 NEW 91 F250 2wd standardcab, 7.3IDI E4OD 3.55 posi
good mileage good towing power ran out of steam towing on big hills and in higher elevations.
#2 Used 89 F250 2wd same driveline and gears but had a shiftkit in trans, 2.5" dual straight pipes crossed over to get equal length at rear bumper. slightly better mileage and more power, COOL SOUND:headbang: still ran out of steam in higher elevations.
#3 NEW 1996 F250 SC short 4x4 7.3 PSD w/ZF 3.55 posis
even better mileage, unbelievable power and fun to tow a loaded trailer with, I drove it as hard as I possibly could, only mod was to remove the muffler and put a turndown just behind the cat. My friends al loved the 2nd gear smokey burnouts I would do with it. I took the flywheel and clutch out at 42,000km under warranty:icon_rofl:
excellent power even at higher elevation.(sold it at 3yrs old to buy house:bawling:)
#4 very used :icon_twisted:1977 F250 SC long 2wd Isuzu 353 6B w/C6 and manual valve body. Dana 60 3.54 open . 33/12/16.5 on rear. towed great if you weren't in a hurry, mileage was about the same as the 91 7.3, but it only had about 135hp and pump was made for offroad/agricultural work.
fun to tow with, avoid hills . sure got a lot of attention though.
#5 1990 F350 SC dually 7.3 IDI w/ATS turbo, E4OD w/shift kit. 4.10s and 215/85/16s. 3" down and turn to a 4" straight through Nelson muffler and 4" turndown. Pulls awesome , sounds awesome not very good fuel economy, but its purpose built/used only for pulling trailer. did headgaskets at 150,000km and used the factory IDI turbo headgaskets.
#6 used 1998 F350 (old style) 7.3 PSD E4OD, 4.10 open all stock except for a turn down behind the cat same as my 96 had. this was a chip truck that I shortened frame by 9' and made it look like a 1984 shorty. :D
it went like stink, fun to drive but I never changed any spring:bawling:, until I got pulled over by our regional police and they went over it for safety:icon_surprised:. it got towed on a flatbed back to the farm after I removed the plates and gave them to the nice officer:annoyed:

I would recommend a 7.3 PSD, just not the first year they came out, they used the EECIV electronics and were really hard to diagnose problems.
I have a 5.9 cummins in a 79 ford project truck but haven't put enough miles on it to come to any conclusion yet.

most powerful diesel I drove was a 1990 F250 2wd standard cab 7.3 E4OD, that I had just done headgaskets on . it had a banks sidewinder turbo and other mods to exhaust/trans/intake. it was pretty unbelievable and smoldered tires like it was a blown big block. unbelievable but we did the headgaskets again after another 20,000km , and then again after another 25,000 . so lots of fun but lots of work too. supposedly was pushing 305hp,way past 7.3 IDI capabilities but way cool:icon_thumby:

D-max is now, always has been, and always will be junk. Their power band is too high. They are better for towing than a gasser, but they are easily the worst of the domestic big diesels because they make peak breaking torque almost at red line.

Well, that's hard to agree with.

I don't like telling anyone what to get. People seem to have their minds made up and are looking for others to empower their decision.

there were some guidelines I was looking at just not suggesting a truck off the top of your head?

Well, the IDI is not a Powerstroke. It's indirect injected. It's not on your list though, so okay.

I have to agree with the people that say to get the earlier Cummins. Anything through '98. Probably will never have to repair anything on it. I could care less about making black smoke with it. The 180hp 420ft# is enough, of whatever spec you end up with.

If you have a front cover leak, or have time to take it apart:

*** Do the KILLER DOWL PIN fix, aka KDP issue.***

It's an alignment pin in the front cover thats notorious for backing out and taking an engine apart via 'wrench in the gears' syndrome....

yep, just helped a friend do this on his. another guy I know the pin backed out on his drive home from the dealership he bought the pick up at..... had a 90 day warranty so he ended up with a new (used) engine.

they have injector issues as well........

OK its oblivious the author of this thread has no idea as to when the engines/bodies changed on any of the domestic vehicles.

93-97 12v Cummins is my number 1 choice.

closely followed by 99-03 7.3s

Except a 93' is still a VE injector pumped engine vs. the 94-98.5's P-pump and it's still the old body style.

Amen. The 6.0 isn't garbage, it just has some design flaws, that can be overcome.

Originally they put torque to yield head bolts on them which causes some compression issues as they slowly stretched out. Those were replaced in an updated part (not sure if it was ever a recall) with the good old cast iron ones that don't do that.

Actually is a very rare problem on a truck that isn't tuned... stick a tuner on one and make plans to put studs in eventually.

It wasn't recalled because Ford can tell by the burn pattern on the piston if it has been overboosted by a tuner and the warrentee was voided... so wasn't their problem.

I'm pretty sure I listed what engines I wanted to know more about ? You obviously understood or else you wouldn't have replied. Not getting lippy with you I just don't understand how you post "author of this thread has no idea as to when the engines/bodies changed on any of the domestic vehicles" making me look like an idiot and then post the answer to the question I was asking ?
