Chip my '94?

i know i can get a performance chip for my '94 4.0, but does anyone recommend any specific models or brands?
 
Not sure how worth it is to even bother with a chip for your setup. Its up to you however. I cannot recommend any paticular brand since I have never really looked at them. What I can tell you is to steer clear of any seemingly too good to be true offers on ebay. You will know what I am talking about, It will either be a straight up a resistor that you get, or a plastic box with two wires coming out of it which simply just hides the resistor to make you think it is something more complicated. it will be priced very low compared to actual ecu chips All those do is replace the coolant temp sensor or air intake temp sensor and trick the computer into running rich. Those are garbage. Thats the biggest advise I can give.

Well, one more thing. Im pretty sure the only way for you to gain HP with a pretty much stock setup (not much outside of intake and exhaust) with the ECU chip is if it changes the fuel and timing maps where the engine REQUIRES premium fuel.

I would suggest not getting the chip if you plan on using regular because the motor is already tuned as best as its going to get for regular fuel from factory. Just be ready to start paying more for gas if you want to see an increase, otherwise you will just damage the motor if you run regular and use an ecu tuned for high octane fuel.
 
ok, do you know if theres any way to tune my engine with the setup at my dads friends garage without a chip?
like retune it to do such and such to boost power a little bit?
 
New plugs, plug wires, pcv valve, rotor cap, distributor cap, fuel filter.

There is not.

Heck, the only way to even update your software is to physically replace the computer with one that has the new program.
 
i really don't see the point of trying to chip your truck. if you want more performance, go by something that has more performance. i don't see the reasoning behind putting money towards more power in a ranger unless do a v8 swap
 
I didn't look if you had an auto or manual- if you have the manual you won't notice much difference. The most change is in the way the auto shifts- which is pretty cool. But don't go with a chip-get the programmer. I've had both and had problems with the chip.
 
Chips are useless and a huge waste of money. They do nothing.

Tuners on the other hand, are useful.
