Check out these two Rangers for sale (and now a Bronco II)

Posts like this one make me really wonder why my truck hasn't sold yet. It's in WAY better shape than either of those above, better optioned AND has the shell and bed liner. I refuse to sell it for the $4-500 that the junkyard says they'll pay for it.

IDK, but you haven't posted a pic of what you're selling.

I was at a swap meet yesterday and it seemed crazy what people were wanting for non running vehicles. We start thinking about the cost of a motor and the other stuff we'd need and start taking it away from the value of the vehicle, but if we had a good running Ranger we were fixing up, we'd probably willingly spend $800 for a solid bed.

When I was at the swap meet Saturday, I saw a cherry picker that was a really good deal, but there was no way it was going to go into the bed of TRS-3. It really made me wish I had a long bed Ranger. I'm going to go look at this brown Ranger in the morning, but I haven't decided if I want it. It doesn't run and I don't think the seller really knows if he transmission even works. It might be in this salvage yard because it has a shitty transmission, and the engine just doesn't run for being neglected for so long. I'll probably only take $800 with me to keep from paying too much for a POS.

Personally if the sheetmetal is solid and isn't too much of a pain to get a title... I would pay a lot more than I would for a fred flintstone special that is full of cancer that runs/drives good.

Especially a first gen with marginal at best transmissions when new. I would rather swap in a M5OD than frame off restore one.

I have to admit that pics make a significant difference. When I search Craigslist, I totally ignore ads with no pics.
Today I managed to clear some of the mess on and around the truck. Tomorrow I should be able to clear enough to get pics of the back half and maybe one of inside the bed. I won't be able to empty the bed for a clear pic for another week or two. By then I should be able to clear the front area enough to get pics of that. I'll start posting pics as soon as I have them.

Saw this beauty this morning

I went and looked at the Ranger. It has some surface rust, but no holes. There's a few minor dings, but nothing. The rocker panel under the drivers door is dented up some. Some idiot pried the door lock out of the drivers door, so the door's screwed up there. The windshield is cracked pretty bad. Didn't notice that in the pictures. Looking underneath the floor board looks solid.

So, here's the story the best that I understand it.

I met with 'G'. G listed the vehicles for sale, but his friend 'T' owns the salvage yard. It's a private yard. T apparently loves old vehicles and has to save them all. The titled owner 'O' bought this truck at an auction. O gave this truck to his friend 'C' that got out of prison and needed a vehicle to drive. It sounds like C probably never titled it, so it's still titled in O's name. Apparently, T got a call asking him to go get the T parked at a drug house. T went and got it and parked it in his personal salvage yard. Nobody seems to know what if anything is wrong with it. There's a couple of wires loose in the steering column which makes me wonder if some meth head at the drug house tried to hotwire it. Maybe the same idiot that pried the lock out of the driver's door. So, nobody seems to know what if anything is wrong with it. T called O while I was there, they don't seem to know what's wrong with it, but apparently T can get a duplicate title so I wouldn't have to apply for a bonded title from the bill of sale.

T asked G how much he listed it for, and G told him $2,000. I asked T what the lowest he'd take for it to go to a good home, and he said $2,000 with the title. I'm not paying $2000 for a vehicle that isn't currently running and driving. I didn't feel comfortable hitting him with $800. Especially since I'm really not sure what I'm getting into with it. He does have a few other generations of Rangers there that aren't complete that he said he'd sell parts off of.

There was a guy there picking up a 1960's Dodge W-200 4-door pickup that was an old Air Force truck. Still had the U.S. Government Vehicle plates riveted to the dash and faded air force markings on the door.

He also had an early 70s Toyota and Datsun pickup sitting close buy that I was surprised he hadn't sold sooner.

Anyway, I told him I was going to think about the Ranger. The trans fluid looked good, and I didn't see any signs of water or coolant in the oil. It could be a major mechanical issue or something as easy as a bad TFI.

Wow… the only thing missing from that story is someone’s baby mama.

Does drama always find you or does she pretty much always know where you are at all times?

Drama as an evil little bitch that stalks me.

These guys asked me if I was into Rangers and I told them a little about TRS. I even told the guy what my vision would be for the truck since he loves all of his vehicles so much. He was at the Decatur swap meet and we talked about how it was mostly older guys, and you don't see any young guys, and I told him I'd like for this truck to inspire the younger guys to save these old trucks. I was really hoping he would have given me a good deal knowing it was going to a good home and not a meth addict that's going to leave it at a drug house. I'm fairly confident T doesn't have any money in this truck. Especially since O gave the Ranger away to a friend and then called T to go get it. O had apparently told T that he would give him the title for it but couldn't find it. Pretty sure the plates on it are in O's name.

Just as a reminder, I bought TRS-3 used from a new car dealer. When I looked at it, it hadn't been cleaned up yet and wreaked of marijuana. Maybe this is more of, the drug trucks find me. LOL.

Just my experience but everyone who says "$2000 with the title" really means "I'll take your money now, promise you the title later and then ghost you." If this junkyard is a business, I would be REALLY suspicious...those guys and towing companies have way more power than anyone else to acquire titles...and if they haven't, there is s

This isn't a business. This guy is a hoarder of vehicles. A few of us know someone like this. He sees a vehicle and has to have it. Then it just sits in his yard. He's got all kinds of stuff in there, and some of this has been there for a long time. He bought the Air Force Dodge because he thought it was neat. Never did anything with it, just had to have it. I talked to the guy that bought it. He was trying to get the brakes to break loose so they could move it. He's planning to swap the body onto a new Dodge chassis with a diesel.

I started to look around the yard but then stopped myself before I found something that I didn't need.

I'm kind of torn. It could be a cool truck. Everything I build is pretty unique. The last was the Bronco II I built for the GF's son. Satin black, gloss black decals, round LED headlights, and redid the interior down to repainting the needles on the gauges. This truck could be cool, but it's more of a money issue for me. $2k just isn't in my budget right now.

That one does look like it might have potential, for somebody.

'87 STX 2.9/auto with some nicer parts on it. They're asking $1400; but not running and I don't see any mention of title status. North Alabama, so it may be too far for you, Jim.

I hear you on that. I see stuff like this, and then I think "I'm glad that I don't have a trailer".

Me: I'd walk completely away from anyone wanting $2k for something non-running. The two or three that I posted here in this thread were vehicles with titles. I have filtered out anything that didn't have a title (not worth my time to even look at em). If you wanted listings for stuff with 'bill of sale only' I could drop down to $500 here in my neighborhood and still find stuff. Most of the stuff with no title are people parting out and trying to get the most money so not willing to sell whole.

KBB & Edmunds values a running working good condition no dent/ding all systems passing 1990 @ $1,700 for reference. If you were buying from a Ranger enthusiast who added all the STX high rider and a bunch of aftermarket sure you would have to pay more but from a joe schmoe you should be able to keep it to "market" value (KBB/Edmunds/etc).

Hey I resemble that.................................... 😎

I don't mind the no title situation for parts trucks but my budget has about two digits in it for those. The scrap yard will only take them in pieces...so there is a LOT of effort involved in cutting a Ranger up with a sawzall... exponentially more for an Explorer or a car or bigger vehicles. A real pain so the price better be worth it.

Main thing I worry about if I bought something that I wanted to fix up or drive, that doesn't have a title, is that it may have a lien on it from a bank or title loan place. Then you're stuck with a big mess and a lot of money which is probably why the last few owners never did anything about it.

Apararently if you go in the local county tax office where you get your plates, they'll check the VIN and see if there's going to be a problem before you even bother applying for the title. You couldn't sell a car in Ohio without a title, and couldn't get a title with a bill of sale. Seems fairly common here.
