im in a jam. got the driveshafts down and the lower 4 bellhousing bolts out. what is the easiest way to get the rest of them out. if i would loosen the body mounts and jack the cab up, would this give the clearance i need to get them out? i really need help here.

you might be able to get a wrench on the upper bolts, on my 93 when i removed the engine on it i had no prob getting a wrench on the top bolts, might take a ltitle while but you could break the bolts loose, then if you had one of those rachet wrenchs it could be a little quicker.

we tried a wrench, theres barely any room behind my 4.0, and the bolts are tight as hell. ive been thinkin that maybe i should try gettin a breaker bar on it because the head swivels, once i break em loose i should be able to use a wrench. thanks for the input!

If you remove the transmission crossmember you can usually get the bellhousing bolts (yes, even the top ones) out with a LONG extension.

However that will not adress the next problem...
the fact that on a V6 Ranger the bellhousing won't usually fit between the top of the transmission tunnel and the Exhaust Y-pipe.

Removing the Y-pipe (which is what the factory manuals tell you to do)
is a nightmare... I will suggest that it's probably easier to loosen the
body mounts on the drivers side and completely disconnecting them
on the passenger side and jacking up the passenger side of the cab
until you have suficient clearance to remove the trans.

however not that I've belatedly read your avatar I see you have a 1999 and the clearance isn't usually a severe issue on the SLA rangers like yours.

Remove the crossmember and go in from the back and you should be OK.

BTW get yourself a long 1/2" drive extension, 3/8drive extensions are usually too flexy...

well we almost have it apart, we got all but 2 bellhousing bolts out, and the heads on those bolts rounded off. i hate this damn truck... today... but once its fixed, ill love it again.

wellt we got her fixed, had to take the exhaustt off and had to use a bolt extracting socket to get one of the bolts and once we removed the crossmember and let the tranny down we could see that the bolt wasnt rounded, but those last two bolts were ridiculously tight. they hadnt been removed since they were put in at the factory. it took 3 of us about 4 hrs.
