Cb Radio Advice

Big radio

Even though the FCC "ONLY" allows 4 watts output on CB radios a competent cb shop can boost output up to 25 watts on some of the better units (cobra 29,25 and 21) by cutting some wires and turning some screws inside, the quality of sound output (what the distant station hears) can be altered by echo and talk back. I have just started this 4x4 stuff and love it-Although I can't answer tech questions I would love to help with cb advice -the best 11 meter (the so called citizens band was JACKED :icon_rofl: from the ham operators in 1958 and it STILL ticks 'em off!) radio is the RANGER :icon_hornsup: buy the best you will never be disappointed

You're comparing carrier power to peak (PEP) power (apples & oranges).

4 watts is the carrier power. At 100% modulation it swings to a peak of 16 watts.

Those Cobra radios you mention can be turned up to about 6-7 watts carrier power. 25w is again only the peak power the modulation tops out at.

And about mod limiters... The limiters in most radios tend to limit things much more than what's needed, so that's why most people remove them and then just control the audio level with the gain on their microphone.

I use mine to listen for smokey reports a lot... You just have to put up with these new age truckdrivers who like to cuss a lot. They don't know what driving a truck for 35 years is like... Cocky little shits.

Yeah Bill, I agree with you that the size is not the problem, but little radios offer less oppurtunities to be peaked and tweaked internally. The 19s can't be tuned at all, according to the local shop. Like I said, the 25 Cobra is the best bang for the buck if ya'll want my opinion.

That's what I mainly use the CB for in my truck is listening for smokey reports. Glad to see i'm not the only one who still does that.:icon_thumby::icon_cheers:

Same here, but I've also used it to help truckers out with problems on their rig and stuff, weather reports, its a pretty universal tool.

Anybody can call us old school if they want, but I think all of us would feel like somethings missing in our trucks if we did'nt have our CBs in there. Again yall just my .02.:D
