Catalytic Converter Temp?

Does anybody know what temperature the catalytic get, on my 4.0L the cats get to 450-500*F??? Is that too hot?

What Im trying to findout is if my catalytic converters are clogged or clogging up...

The cats are supposed to be hot (about 350 - 400), but not that hot. That temp indicates unburned fuel is getting to the cats. You are probably running too rich. What is your fuel mileage?

If they were clogged, you would have problems with running at higher RPMs if you could run at all.
You might want to get an engine monitor to see the readings.

Fuel milage about 13-15 MPG.. It runs pretty smooth and all but on Wide open throttle it kind of bogs and as im releasing the gas pedal it seems to responds and accelerate better... Did a tune up not too long ago, few months back..

Cat temps

CAT temps run in excess of 600 degrees; if you are running rich your muffler and exhaust will be cool (ie: to cool of a cat). I have only been able to cause my ECU to go into "warm-up" mode by providing too much air @ the intake. The ECU sees it as the engine warming up and stays in "warm-up" MODE, just dumping fuel in. This single thing hurt my fuel mileage more than any other thing I ever tried with the 2.9l.

I redesigned my intake to balance out the air in and reclaimed my mileage plus some with a performance chip and balanced intake air.

a little cold, but i wouldn't say its bad.

to test the cat you need to run the engine at 2k or more for about 5 minutes and then check the inlet and outlet temperatures of the cat.

inlet should be about 550 degrees or more, and the outlet should be cooler than the inlet.. if its equal or more then its not working
