actually any modern semi on the road is quite clean and likely puts out less harmfull pollutants than your truck did with the cat still on it.

and yes, vehicles prior to the clean air act did pollute a lot. its called the 21st century, welcome to it. its an era were v-6's make as much power as previous generation v-8s and get better economy than previous generation 4 cylinders. its also an era where we understand the chemicals coming from our tailpipes and can easily and cheaply reduce them.

The Magnaflow cat we got for the Chevy only cost $60. On vehicles with rear o2 sensors, a properly functioning cat is necessary for the vehicle to run properly. It is possible to get an o2 emulator ("liar") that mimics the signal produced by the cat in order to "fool" the PCM into thinking it's still there, but emulators are just as expensive (or even more expensive) than getting a replacement cat anyways.

To the OP, if you want to replace the cat (which I would strongly suggest), you can save yourself a bunch of money by ordering a universal cat from www.summitracing.com or another online vendor. Muffler shops usually charge an arm and a leg for cats. The same $60 cat I got online was more than $200 at the muffler shop (not including labor). Then you can just straight-pipe it after the cat and break even on the whole thing by not having to buy a muffler.

rangerpimpn84--whatever your opinion is, it's against federal law to remove an emissions control device. We don't all allow discussions about breaking the law due to liability reasons.
