carrier bearing (2pc. driveshaft)

ill be getting a new one piece soon, but i went under the truck today and noticed allot of play at the carrier bearing, like a good ammount. what is the normal amount of play there? if any? it doesnt really mater but just curious, my truck shutters awfully when i start from stop and vibrates like none other on the highway ahha.

good to know. hahah , im picking up the 1 pc. today. guy said its got 80k miles on it. heres another question does anyone know what the length of the 1pc. is ? just so i dont get ripped off

Actually most of the time there isn't a damned thing wrong with the BEARING, the issue is usually the rubber BUSHING it's mounted in.

And the cheap and easy way to fix that is using either a length of heater hose split lengthwise (like the banana in a "Banana-split") OR a length of 3/8" fuel line
and use that to "shim" the rubber bushing iby stuffing your additional piece of rubber inside the "strap" that mounts the carrier bearing to the crossmember.

that gets rid of the excess play (Note to everyone: "Excess play" is a redundant statement)

thats a cool suggestion. i dont like the 2pc because it just has too many parts to it. some times i feel like ford just over complicates things, but i dont think the rangers were originally intended for heavy off road use. just a light truck for hauling flowers around in. when my truck was stock it was an awsome road truck. for long trips and stuff, did great.

I switched to a one-piece driveshaft on my supercab in 1999.

only about a year after they came out on the '98's

My truck is "sorta" an '87 and you cannot imagine how many of the tiny-weeny little stock u-joints I burned up.

haha yeah i could immagine. that can get costly. anyone have any good suggestions on U-joints? something thats good but not to expencive?

FYI - I had the exact same problem with my 1995 4x4 ext. cab. This past weekend I decided to replace my two piece with a one piece. I followed the instructions in the Tech Library. I bought my once piece from a salvage yard for $106 even including tax. I thought that was a great deal considering this was the second time I blew out my carrier bearing (I have over 270,000 miles on my truck) and the first time it cost me about $150 to have it fixed by a local shop. AutoZone sells the parts for ~$65. I guess it's up to you to decide what's a better deal. At this point you can pay a little less for the parts and run the risk of blowing the bearing again, or pay a little more now and never worrying about it again.

In all, it took me a little over an hour from start to finish. When I was done I took it for a drive and had no vibration.

47 inches. You can confirm this in the Tech Library. My used 1 piece had 198,000 on it. I figured that was just getting broken in considering my two piece had over 270,000 on it (I got it new in 1995).

kew yah i got it the other day it the guy said it had 80k on it, but it was in saran wrap.... LOL. for two years. but after i pressure washed it it looked purtty good, put new u joints in it yesterday. in the past weeek ive done 8 u joints by hand, i hope tto never do that again.
