can't reprogram keyless entry fobs

Just got a 2002 Ranger! i'll have pics up soon the previous owner never used the RKE fob, so he told me the batteries were probably dead. i JUST went out to buy new batteries and have followed the RKE fob reprogramming ritual (the whole off to run 8 times in 10 seconds etc). when i end the 8th turn, it locks and unlocks like it should, but when i push the buttons on fob to program, i get no acknowledgement. so basically i can't tell if the fob is busted, or...if i'm doing something wrong. it seems to be very straightforward, i'm thinking maybe the fob is defective.

oh i also noticed that when i lock the doors using the switch inside, and then shut the door, the signals flash once. is this anti-theft being armed or something?

OK, you are doing this correct. I think you should hit the lock button and then turn the key off, then try to use the fob. Let us know I can look this up further.

mentalbreakdown, i did as you said and it still doesn't work. i'm thinking i'll call a local dealer and see if they have an extra fob lying around. i only got 1 key and 1 fob with the Ranger anyway, so i was going to buy a new key and fob as a spare. i can do that, see if the new fob works, and if so, then i'll just get a single fob to replace the broke one. We'll see...thanks for the help

back from the dealer. i had them cut and reprogram a spare key, and i bought a new fob. the new fob works just great with the RKE system, so...i guess i have a pair of fresh CR2016 batteries...too bad the old remote was broke.
