Can a Head Unit Power These?

The guy at Crutchfield says they cant be run off a head unit alone and would need an amp. I went to the audio store today and looked at speakers and found http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_12034_Kenwood+eXcelon+KFC-X682C.html

The guy at the store was gonna set me up with 2 sets of 2 of the Kenwood with a $199 Kenwood HU that has a sub controller. Im assuming that this HU could power the speakers then.

The guy at crutchfield says that the HU alone would not be giving the speakers enough power and would make poor sound quality and would eventually hurt the speakers.

Im already buying an amp for the subs and I dont want to have to spend a whole bunch more for a second amp.

Do I really need an amp for those speakers? (The Kenwoods or the Alpines)

WOW! Are you serious?!?!??! Okay, from the top .....

Yes, the first pair of speakers you linked can be run off "just" a head unit. You do NOT need an amp. The speakers would certainly play louder and probably with a bit more clarity if run through an amp, but an amp is NOT a necessity.

Same goes for the second pair of speakers you linked.

Majority of head units out there will provide enough juice to power the majority of speakers out there, certainly any conventional 5x7/6x8 speakers (co-axial and component).

As for "not enough power" and "hurt the speakers" - ludricous! If that was the case then speakers would blow if you were giving them anything less than full power all the time. The guy at Crutchfield was merely trying to sell you stuff you don't [/i]need[/i].

Get a pair of speakers that you can afford and put them in the doors. Run them off the head unit or the front channels of a 4-channel amp. Run a sub off a single amp or the (bridged) rear channel of a 4-channel amp. It's easy, doesn't break the bank and "sounds good".

And my friend who is gonna help me do the install is giving me a Bass Pass or link or whatever sub box that is sweet and will work for those 2 12"s

Lemme know what you think of that setup and if you suggest any changes.

All together it will cost 603 with kenwood speakers or 557 with the alpines

i dont think you can use a mono block amp with 2 subs. plus the rms that amp puts out is more than the subs can handle. look into a 2 channel amp and slightly higher rms wattage subs.

and heres a little tip for ya. if your looking at buying for sonicelectronix or crutchfield, when you have picked out what ya want. copy and paste the model numbers to ebay and see what comes up. i can promise there cheaper on ebay and most of the time with free shiiping. headunits are what they are, no real saving there. but you can save the shipping by buying on ebay. just a little heads up for ya.

i dont think you can use a mono block amp with 2 subs.

yes you can as long as you have the right final ohm load, IE: 2xDual 4 ohm subs could be wired in parallel to have a 1 ohm final load so it would be fine on a single 1 ohm stable mono amp. or 2xDual 2 ohm subs could be wired in series/parallel to a 2 ohm final load on a 2 ohm stable mono amp

those subs and amp will work perfectly together since 2xsingle 4 ohm subs will be wired to 2 ohms. The amp puts out 400w rms at 2 ohms so each sub would recieve 200w rms which is the subs rms rating so it would be fine.

Yeah and Im not buying it all from Sonic or Crutchfield. Like the HU is $175 from local retailer, sub are 100 for both locally, and the amp is cheaper locally as well. All together Its gonna cost me around 500 or 600. Any suggestions on changing anything I picked out?

if you know what your looking for and know the companys to look for, then it is worth looking at. companies like crutchfield or sonicelectronix, are only suppliers, when it comes to the warranty, thell send ya right to the manifacturor. they dont do anything, ive been down that road many, many times.
