According to fords parts system rangers started in late 86 and mustangs started in 91 I am the parts manager at a Ford dealership so I'm looking right at the ford parts screen.
Smart ass remarks, and parts books aside, general production, all vehicles, wasn't until 88 according to all info I have. Some models for outer space(California) may have been earlier.shady.
Mine wasn't for california, if you find a 86 - 88 ranger with a 2.3 in the salvage yard it's only few little bolts to remove the valve cover to determine if it has a roller or not, with some things that Ford did you never know. I've found traction-locks, detroit lockers, and nodular cases in various Ford vehicles that you wouldn't think they would put them in, so it doesn't hurt to open your mind, and eyes to take a look.
when ni built my ebgine i used a roller cam out of a 91 in a 85 head works great roller cam needs roller followers and i put solid lifters so you must adjust to spec i found it a little tricky at frist but got the hang of it pretty quick
