California banning "high" rolling resistant tires

My AWD Escape has low rolling resistance and they work fine for us because, being retired, if we get a snow storm we stay home and reschedule any appointments. They wouldn't work well in snow or mud, though.
I'll worry about the gas my Escape- or Mustang and Ranger- use when they ground all the private jets, restrict air travel, and dock all the mega yachts and cruise ships to reduce carbon emissions. Their fuel use is measured in tons.

Yes, it's dumb. But, since I live in California I took a look at what is available for "eco" tires. The prices are comparable. Mostly, they wear faster. The wear rate ranges from moderately worse, to slighly less. That is based on the tires that are available now. The biggest issue I see is availability in some sizes. Those of us running stock 14 or 15 inch sizes have just an OK selection at this point. Looking at 225/70/15, there is currently one brand available (Hankook) with two different tires available for that size on Tirerack.com. Of course there are alternate tire sizes that will fit. But, changing the tire size can result in decreasing fuel economy.

There's also the issue of, what if you hit something that causes unrepairable damage? Can one buy a tire that matches the other three? Will one tire with lower rolling resistance cause a vehicle to pull to one side?

I also want to mention that I'm a little more than a 2 hour drive from Reno. So, if I have to, I'll just buy tires there.
until they post check-in guards at the border.

duh, what am I thinkin' , border guards in California :icon_rofl:

The factory low rolling resistance tires on Brittney's versa were scary. It was like riding a bicycle on ice with hot tires on dry pavement.

The Continental tires that came with my Ranger when I bought it mostly handled OK. Stopping was good. However, it was really easy to break traction if I was on less than perfect pavement and wanted to take off from a stoplight a little fast. But, they wore out in about 20K miles, so while I kept thinking I should just replace the tires, I had to replace them before it took me the time to decide to. I'm sure they were the cheapest low-rolling resistance tires could find at the time.

^That's what her car was like from the factory.

The more I find out about this the madder I get. It is just so friggin stupid.

Doesn't the California ban exempt 34" and larger tires? Get bigger tires.

It wouldn't surprise me if they make you have to buy tires for your Ford from your Ford dealer and require the dealer to install them.

One on my complaints about the 2019 Ranger when it came out were the Dynapro tires. They didn't choose them because they were a good all terrain tire, they chose them because they met an MPG requirement.

Next thing you know, they'll be lowering speed limits again. My car got 30-31 MPG driving from Texas to Ohio, but the MPG dropped in areas where the speedlimit was 75 MPH.

I'm starting to think the problem with the world is that there's too many people in it. The U.S. population in 1986 was 240M. Today it's 349M. Time to stop putting safety labels on things.
