buying a welder

When i got out of high school i got a cambell hausfield 110 mig welder from walmart. Don' t knock it because i worked there i got about 25% off when i bought it. I have a air tank forit, and i've never had any problems for it. I made a bumper with 1/4 inch steel and have put it through some severe beating with no problems. i get parts from a local welding store. If i had the money i would invest in a bigger welder, but dont really need one.

One major difference is that Miller has an infinite amperage control, where Lincoln has settings in increments. You can fine tune the amperage on a Miller.

LOL, they both offer infinite voltage control models at nearly identical prices.

When my infinite breaks, I'm probably going to buy from an indiana company that advertises on ebay....around 600 would get me either a miller 140 or a lincoln 140C


The thing I had to repeatedly learn while welding thin stuff edge to edge is I can either spend a bit of time making the pieces of metal fit together with no gap, or I can just throw it all together and spend four times as long welding and cleaning it up.....LMAO......FRICKING FRUSTRATING, and a lesson I'm not likely to be relearning.

i highly sugest the lincon weldpac 3200

x2 That was my first very own welder. I got it a few years ago. It's what I learned on. I still have it it has done everything from rock sliders to cab corners to trailers to whatever needs to be done. I would go with gas too. You can get a few scrap pieces of steel to practice your flux core. If you can do flux you have no problems doing gas. Another option is finding a nice Lincoln Ranger 8. Very nice machine. It doubles as a generator and has a gas engine. No go getting an extension cord. It's a stick (ARC) machine but if you can run stick you will have no worries running anything till you get to TIG, and stick is a little stronger.

I guess they changed it. Or maybe i'm thinking of the wrong thing. There was definitely a difference a few years back.

Like the Miller Thunderbolt vs. the Lincoln 225 stick welders. I'm sure they are still like they were a few years ago. The Lincoln had settings with about 30 or so amp gaps in between. I'm pretty sure Lincolns MIG welders were the same, with presets that didn't allow in-between settings.

Maybe it's just me, but I like that ability to dial it in real fine.

I just picked up a 230V mig with 4 heat settings and wire feed control. Picked up a gas bottle and I already had the regulator.

Gass bottle and fill $120

Welds 1/4" steel like butter...Priceless.

Get a good lincoln I love my lincoln ive had it for years now and welded tons of stuff. I started out using flux crap and still do for the easy stuff. I actually fluxed most of the hotside on the turbo kit on my truck. I use gas mostly now but I still use flux wire if im doing alot of tacking since its cheaper not to waste gas. Just get a wirefeed that has a gas hookup so you can get the gas latter

If you get good you can even make flux crap welds not look so bad. Im still a newb to welding

I picked up the Lincolin 140c and love it. It's great now that I have the gas. Supper clean welds! It wasn't that bad with flux core either. You just have to f**k with it to reduce spatter.

if you are doing a butt weld and have a gap,use alum. or copper behind it if possible.
