Buyin a ranger, potential clutch problem?

The clutch grabs about 3/4 of the way out, IT seems to be way too much. The pedal has to be almost all of the way extended out before it engages. He told me that it has been like that since he bought it (18,000 miles ago from a ford dealer). That is not normal correct?

No, it's not a problem.

Here's an example. On my truck I replaced the master cylinder, slave cylinder, line, pilot bearing, throw-out bearing, clutch disc, pressure plate, and flywheel. EVERYTHING is brand new, and installed to spec. And my pedal engages right at the end like you described. Pedal travel and engagement point is usually meaningless when it comes the the life left on a clutch.

Like MAKG mentioned, a Corolla is rediculously reliable. My dad owns a 2002 Prizm, which is identical to the Corolla (built on the same line out in CA) and the quality on that car is amazing. It has 150,000 hard Michigan miles on it, and you'd swear your driving it off the lot. ALL he's done is change the oil. The plugs are still original.

the toyota has 95000 on it, the ford Im getting has 118000 on it. I like the celica just i I want a truck for 4wd and the bed for my quad. And the celica has 140hp, its too slow for a car that looks so fast, the ranger has 207 :) which I didnt really get to test out just driving around the block...

Sure, it's only 90 HP. But it's completely adequate for heavy mountain driving I do.

Even with 300K, it was fine for passing at 5000 RPM. Even at 8000 feet on my last road trip. I'd still be driving it if my wife hadn't scrunched it up on the highway.

You're complaining about 140 HP? With the weight difference, that's MORE acceleration than the 4.0L you're considering. And it gets twice the mileage.

Sounds to me like driver error....

lol no I know, 140hp for a little sports car but the thing looks like it flys, its the gt and especially with the auto tranny its just not as fun. Im just wondering if you guys think that its worth it, replace the celica with the ranger. Its a 2000 celica btw.

The 4.0 will be much better at hauling a quad though...

hey man. i dont blame you for upping the ante witha ranger for a daily driver. with the ranger vs. toyota senario...i'd go ranger. they are extremely reliable trucks and the five rangers i have within my family are just tanks, they just keep goin thru hell and back
( thats including my sisters driving )

I bought my 99 ranger in fall 05 with 142000 on the clock. 3 years later, 211000 miles, the only maintenance required is oil, plugs, and wires. had to replace teh alternator, but who hasn't on their truck with a lot of miles. It is a very well put together truck.

As for the toyote mechanic...conside the source when they bash other vehicles. Might just be a diehard toyota guy that hate fords for some reason. so the celica might be a good car, but that ranger will do you well. cant offroad a celica to get to your riding area with a quad anyway!

Wanna bet?

I took the Prizm on a rather sandy logging trail on Mt. Shasta this past summer. Did a bit of slalom. The Prizm has been on some desert trails as well.

And I've seen at least one Tercel with a trailer hitch.

That would be a treat to drive with any sort of a load...
