The clutch grabs about 3/4 of the way out, IT seems to be way too much. The pedal has to be almost all of the way extended out before it engages. He told me that it has been like that since he bought it (18,000 miles ago from a ford dealer). That is not normal correct?
No, it's not a problem.
Here's an example. On my truck I replaced the master cylinder, slave cylinder, line, pilot bearing, throw-out bearing, clutch disc, pressure plate, and flywheel. EVERYTHING is brand new, and installed to spec. And my pedal engages right at the end like you described. Pedal travel and engagement point is usually meaningless when it comes the the life left on a clutch.
Like MAKG mentioned, a Corolla is rediculously reliable. My dad owns a 2002 Prizm, which is identical to the Corolla (built on the same line out in CA) and the quality on that car is amazing. It has 150,000 hard Michigan miles on it, and you'd swear your driving it off the lot. ALL he's done is change the oil. The plugs are still original.
