burn 4-wheel drive out?

NO NO NO NO NO NO! That would be horrible as most if not all people who had the NP203 got ride of them and installed the NP205.

The NP205 is awesome... gotta love the 2.0:1 low range;missingteeth;
I have a better crawl ratio in 5th 4hi w/3.27's:icon_rofl:

Anyways back on topic. I've been told that you can break-in the front gears by leaving the front hubs locked in 2hi(open), or in 4hi hubs unlocked(locker/LSD), for around 750mi. Thats what my trans/rear guy told me.

ya, ditto here....just lock up the hubs and leave the tcase in 2wd for a couple weeks. It's how I did mine and the pattern wore in good. Just beware of lower mileage....

Heck I saw 4 wheel drive burnout and expected to see 4 tires with smoke pouring off them. As far as not killing your 4x4 system you can't use it in situations where there is no slip between front and rear axles due to the lack of a central differential to compensate for differeing wheel speeds. It doesn't really burn anything up, just simply breaks stuff.

The problem is that only wears the coast side of the teeth. It would work if you were driving around in reverse........

You don't need to "break in" the front gears. They do not have the same job as the rear axle. They will wear in at their own pace.

Nobody gets rid of their NP203. There was a kit to pull a cable and unlock the front. JCWhitney carried it for decades. I'll bet it's still out there somewhere. A guy we wheeled with locally before our wheeling group disintegrated did that conversion as late as 2003. I'd love to have a NP203. The full time would be great in the winter.

Should have added to that, I did it but didn't think to post it....

After that session, unlock the hubs and run the tcase in 4wd.....

You guys realize that most people's D35s are never used, right?

The front doesn't see anywhere near the same stresses at the rear. "Breaking it in" (beyond testing the contact pattern) is a waste of time.

Now, initial break-in with new gears in the rear is a good idea. Just run the vehicle on a lift in gear at idle for half an hour, then drive it around and take it easy. Change the gear oil after a few hundred miles (especially if you have a limited slip). Then forget about it.

sorry to change the subject but on the other page people were sayin about drive in 4L with the hubs UNLOCKED an will that in a way give you 2L instead of 2H?

yup, works great for moving stuff slowly (trailers) without giving the bind of 4wd allowing tight turns.

wow really well thats nice to kno, so its not hard on the t case to do this or hard on any drive train part?

It's only hard on the parts (rear driveshaft and axle) if you hammer on it. 4-LO creates a lot of torque, you need to take it easy on it.

It saves lots of wear on the clutch. With an auto transmission I would probably never use it.
