Bulges of Death ####################

Just about every offroad tire failure I've seen involves one of two things:

The person is running a tire that's too old. Any tire older than 6 years should be replaced, regardless of the amount of tread. Just look at some of the pics above, you can tell the tire is very old.

Or, the person was overloading or under-inflating the tire. This will kill a tire QUICKLY.

I run ProComp m/t's and they've been a great tire for me. When you run a tire offroad, sidewall damage can occur at any time to any tire. I've seen sidewall damage just like in the pic in many other brands of offroad tire.

CHECK every sidewall for cracking...........for those M/T.......complaints all over the internet.

Possible Recall PRO COMP M/T

I watched that ABC news video and one thing I don't get is when they're doing the tire dates. I get the week but not the digit afterwards. How do they know if a tire was made in 2004 or 1994?

Sharp objects have been wreaking havok with tires ever since someone had the brainy idea of filling them with air. That isn't normal wear and tear, he either found something sharp or got somebody ticked off at him and slashed his tire. I got a very similar cut in on of my AT's on my F-150 while mudding on a mud road... I suspect a hunk of steel I didn't see buried in the mud rather than a flub at the factory.

I don't think they go back that far.

PROCOMP AT TIRES THAT I HAVE ON MY TRUCK AT THIS TIME HAVE TWO LARGE BULGES IN THE SIDE WHICH LOOK LIKE THE CORDS ARE COMING APART. I TOOK THE TIRES TO 4WHEEL PARTS AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY LOOKED FINE BUT WOULD REPLACED THEM BUT I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENTS. THEN I TOOK THE TIRES TO TWO OTHER SHOPS AND BOTH INFORMED ME THAT THE TIRES HAD SEPARATED CORDS AND WERE A DANGER. NOW I DO NOT EVEN HAVE 10000 MILES ON THESE TIRES AND THEY ARE COMING APART AND THE DEALER OWNER OF THESE TIRES WILL NOT DO A THING TO ASSIST ME BEFORE THEY BLOW. THIS TO ME IS POOR WORKMANSHIP AND SALES ALONG WITH NO REGARDS TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY. PLEASE ASSIST ME AND OTHERS THAT SPENT OUR HARD EARNED MONEY TO GET THESE TIRES EITHER TAKEN OFF MARKET OR REPLACED. *TR

a tire made in 32 week of 1994 number looks like this 324
a tire made in 32 week of 2004 number looks like this 3204
basicily if the tire was made after 2000 the tire will have a 4 digit dot number

ok i used to work at a tire shop and we had tires with these bulges like that all the time. it is usally from the tire seperating from being ran with to low of air pressure, wich causes heat and then the tire seperates in a spot faster than others and air gets inside and causes the bulge. it happens to all tires that are not properly inflated or get a hole and the tire is ran for awhile than aired up than ran low again. as for the dot numbers 234(or 2394) vs 2304 the first one is 23rd week of 1994 and the second one is the 23rd week of 2004. to add to the bulges weve had tires that the entire sidewall was a giant bulge, weve evan had a few tires that were flat than we aired them up to find the leak and the bulge airs up faster and explodes, good thing we put the tires in a saftey cage. it just doesnt happen to a good tire it has to be unproperly inflated driven on like thatfor a while. we would get tires in for a flat repair and the tire would not be repairable due to what we called "run flat" not the type of tires on highperformance cars but when the tire has been ran on while flat, causing a heat ring where the tire has damage on the inside of the sidewall, which will lead to seperation, its not the tires fault its the driver for not checking tire pressure time to time

That is not a Procomp AT BTW, it looks like a BFG MT.

My dad had a set of Goodyear RTS's that dryrotted really weird in about a section about 8" x 2" on the inside of the tire right beside the bead. All four did it, the dealer said too bad. At a year and a half old they were out of warrentee and if we didn't like them, it was on our dime to do something about it... so it was Firestones the next time.

Where as I was mudding in my F-150 and snagged a sharp chunk of something and put a gash in my Widetrack Baja AT, got a new one based on the percentage of wear on the cut tire... so for $30 I drove out with a brand new tire.

Service is everything, and how much the dealer is willing to stand behind their product should mean more than the actual product itself to a point.

My Xterrains had bubbles in the sidewall, and were just an all around shitty tire.

my good buddy and i both run x terrains and the only problem weve had, well actually me, was when i got my tires installed where i used to work, one of the new guys ripped the bead and the tire blew. but good thing i wasnt drivin it. but they replaced it for free because they damaged the tire when installing it. where i used to work they offered certs. which is free replacement if the tire gets damaged beyond repair, and for the extra $20-$30 its worth it. they also prorate tires even if you didnt buy the tires from them, which is where they meassure the tread depth and give you money off the new tire depending on how much tread is left. and ofcorse if you are offroading and snag the tire on a root or rock or somethin like that then you will get sidewall damage on allmost any tire.

damn that sounds alot like discount/americas tire company lol :derisive:. I love the certs on tires, specially when i get the race truck done and blow out tires left and right, but it also helps when you know a few store managers.
