brown wire

what does the brown wire that goes into the transfer case. its a 1354e in a 96 ranger and also did anyone notice that the plug for the newer motor doesnt have this wire in it i was just wondering what it ws for

I think I read somewhere awhile ago its for the auto 4x4.

It will somehow engage 4x4 when there is wheel slip in the rear. My 98 sploder has the auto 4x4 and the brown wire.

I think back in the day there was a thread about how to disable the auto 4x4 and they talked about the brown wire to the case. I was going to try to disable it but i never found the article.

Im sure someone that knows for sure will chime in.

i have read that about the xplorers but my rager doesnt have auto 4x4 so i was just wonderin what i did

It engages the clutch that spins up the front driveline just before making the shift from 2WD.

whoops, missed that part. explorers of that year had the 4405 i believe.

so do i need to hook it up or just not worry about it...i would think with manual hubs it wouldnt matter right?

I would hook it up... only because if you or someone accidentally bumps the 4x4 button while you're going down the highway, that thing may start banging and chattering while trying to engage 4x4 because without the clutch it can't get the front driveshaft spun up to speed. Should that happen, you won't be able to shift it back out to stop it from chattering for a good 5-10 seconds either.
