I may get flamed for this but......." I be leave that if they want to enforce a seat belt law in my state of Pennsylvania but you can operate a motorcycle without a helmet makes absolutely no sense to me "

It should be up to the operator of the motor vehicle weather you wear a seat belt or helmet not our communist government!

Back to new ranger possibilities, as far as the fancy gadgets and features on trucks now. Yes they are a lot and can be expensive. You can get a base model truck though. The last 150 I had was a base model. Vinyl floors, Ac, and a radio. Still hate carpet in a truck. It was very affordable. The reality is most of us have become accustom to the creature comforts. That's why they don't have many base model trucks on the lot. They are around though. Our local dealer keeps some usually because they have a big work truck market.

I think we can all agree there is a market. They sell a ton of full size trucks so I'm sure setting up to run a new line is not as high on the list of proirities.

I like the idea of an actual small truck though. Unibody is ok. That's a market that hasn't been tapped. Something the average homeowner can go to lowes, get a few bags of mulch, easy to park in a crowded parking lot, tow a small trailer.

That truck exists right now. It's called the Honda Ridgeline. You could argue that it's not an actual "small truck", but it is basically what you described, and would meet the needs of most homeowners like you said.

I'm not saying it's like the Rangers that we all know and love. I'm saying that if the Ranger ever returns to the US market, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see it come back as something like the Ridgeline. The previous poster mentioned that a similar truck would probably fit the needs of most full size truck buyers that never tickle the limits of what their trucks can do, and I agree. Payload of 1600lbs, tow rating of 5-7k, 25-30mpg, capable of all the Lowes runs and "helping friends move" trips that most truck buyers do.

In response to your other points, First off, many of the "most American" vehicles made have been from "import" brands for many years. It's a global world. Cars are made everywhere. I know several people who keep a roof over their head by building "import" vehicles in the middle of the US, while "domestic" manufacturers make many products outside of the US.
Second, if you were ever quoted a price of 50k for a Ridgeline, it was a load of crap. The 1st gen had a starting MSRP do 29-40k, and like most trucks, you could usually get them for less than the sticker price. That price isn't far off from what GM, Toyota and Nissan charge for their smallish trucks.

Nix the law but bodily insurance is void for whatever driver/passenger doesn't have a seat belt or helmet on.

All of the ones you've seen on the road are 1st gen. Some cool ideas, and plenty capable for the average truck buyers needs, but they were horrendously ugly, and got disappointing fuel economy. They mercifully quit making them in 2014. I posted a link above to the 2nd gen that was just revealed and will be on sale soon. IMO it looks much better.

The problem with the Ridgeline is it is just as wide as an F-150 (77.8" vs 79.9 respectively), not the 66.9" of the Ranger (1st generation). That extra foot of width makes Honda's truck a full size. (Neighbor 3 doors down has one and it is much closer in size to my '97 F-250 than my '98 Ranger)

Personally, I was hoping Dodge would bring the Fiat Strada to Canada (aka Ram 750). http://www.autoevolution.com/news/2015-ram-750-86809.html. 65.5" wide, box of 5½' (short cab)x 4¼' wide (fits sheet of plywood just as good as my Ranger regular cab/short box), 1,500lb payload, $14k USD base price. I can probably live with the FWD.
