I'm working on getting my '84 mustang ready for antique plates in a few months and wanted to know what the engine came out of. So, i looked behind the starter to get the casting number and there wasn't one. Does anyone know where, if any, other spot i can look to determine what the engine came out of? and do brand new blocks have casting numbers? or crate engines? I know it's not original because i put it in, and took it out of a wrecked '86 mustang but it's not roller so it's not original to that car either. thanks for any help.

If it's a roller block, its there, you just have to look harder. It's tucked in the lower rear corner of the block, not above the starter, rather behind it.

thanks, I found it. I was told it wasn't a roller motor though. My cousin was supposed to get it before me but he said it wasn't a roller motor so he didn't want it. the number is E5AE. now i just have to look up what vehicle is a code A. Everything else i know.

E5AE is an early roller block used in the Mustangs, also used in other applications, but with a flat tappet cam. Same block can be used with either cam. The letter "A" denotes a full size car, but doesn't mean that's the only vehicle it could have been used in. These blocks were used in every application that had a 302/5.0 engine. This is the engineering number, not a part number. It simply means the engineering cost were assigned to the full size car line.

So does that mean i could say get an E303 cam and some roller lifters and swap them in with no problem?

Yea, as long as the two retainer spyder bolt holes are drilled and tapped in the lifter valley. If not then you'll need to drill & tap em yourself.

that's some pretty good info. to know thanks
