I'm wanting to remove my rear bumper to fix a dent that a pleasant fellow miami driver helped to ding. After removing it and cleaning up the dent I want to paint it my truck's body color. It is currently painted black.

What does it take to remove it?

And how should I go about painting it? Is that Auto spray paint any good? Or is actual paint with a paint gun the best option? My last resort would be taking it to a pro...

The Dupli-Color paint match stuff that comes in a can is pretty good. For a just a bumper I wouldn't bother using a gun unless you have those kind of resources handy.

Four bolts dude.. comes right off.

Just make sure you have a buddy there to help you hold it, or something to prop it on. It's a pain once you get two bolts undone to keep it level. Plus you don't want it falling on you.

I took a bumper to the face once. That hurts.

SEM trim paint is amazing stuff

Is there a big visual difference between the dupli color stuff and actual paint with a paint gun?

I'm also considering doing the front bumper if I'm at it. How big of a deal is it to get the front removed? I'd want to split the lower part from the mid section, looks like it could be more troublesome.

the fronts a little more of a pain than the rear but is by no means difficult, the valence comes off with the removal of probably about 8, 8mm bolts that go through the plastic valence up into those little speed nut things that jam themselves in the actual metal bumper. after that there's 2 nuts on each side and you can get the bumper off, there's a few pieces to the bracket system that secure the bumper to the front of the frame but you don't have to take it all apart.

Whatttttt.

My front bumper was held on with two bolts, just like the rear.

Might be a generation difference there though.

oh yeah i guess it must be, i was referring to an 02, the front frame horns changed in what? 98? i think. But yeah my was alot different than the rear, there were all sorts of bolts and nuts and brackets taht could slide around to adjust the alignment of the damn thing. so im guessing its the bumpers with the bigger uglier valences starting in around 01 that i got stuck with.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I have the big ugly one since it's an 06.

I'll take a close look at it, if I have time I'm going to try it next weekend, I'll take pics and make a write up if I go ahead with it.
