family took pity on my old radio and bought me an Echo Dot this week.
not sure what the big concern is, that trusty 'ol Channel Master has been serving me well since about 1970. IF I set the antennae "correctly" :icon_thumby:

If it makes you feel any better, I run an 80's pioneer HiFi system, given to me by my grandma, at my house.

I'm not even old enough to have experienced the age of HiFi systems yet I love the thing. It gets a dusting out and deoxit every 3 months or so, and I suspect it may well outlive me at this rate.

I have an Onkyo AV receiver in the bedroom, with Pioneer (I think) speakers for sound on the 50in flatscreen that mostly plays Disney on Xbox. Stereo equipment is quite literally not made like it used to be.

I got a mid -late 80's stereo/boombox thing i turn on when im dinkin around. The antenna broke years ago so i rigged an old antenna off a 79 ford i plug in then run out the window.

The wife bought one of those alexa things for the house....and frankly it creeps me out.

Funny...until recently, I used an old Fischer tube model in the barn. It was Ann's when she was single. I've had it apart several times replacing tubes and the dial chord that that wraps around the station tuner dial. Hooked it to some box speakers that I cobbled together using all the old 4 and 6 inch speakers I had laying around.

Alexa creeps me out too...

Dad has my old boombox in his wood shop. The CD player quit on it years ago but the radio and dual cassette work fine.

I have the stereo I cobbled together in college. Had two receivers rigged together and an equalizer so anything over a 2 on the volume will rattle the house. CD changer, cassette deck, and record player all linked with 4 speakers. Honestly, I don’t use it much. Most of the time I just have a cheap bluetooth speaker and stream through my phone. I refuse an Echo Dot or Alexia or any of that. My devices spy enough, I don’t need any more.

There has been at least one report of amazon employees messing around with people's alexa devices. Listening in, creeping on people's kids, etc. I have some ring cameras outside to keep tabs on the property but nothing inside.

Yeah hard pass on smart home stuff for the most part. Way too many instances of someone in our house talking about something and the next thing you know, we're all getting ads for it. Amazon & Google should be paying YOU to keep their spy devices in your house.

Anonymity is obsolete.

It's disturbing to think of things this way, but it sure seems that humans have become slaves to technology. The ultimate "opiate for the masses".

And when profit is what drives that, it's not good.

Im unplugging that thing as soon as i get home and using it for target practice

I have a 1994 Era Pioneer component stereo for the house. 6 disc changer, Elite series tape deck and VSX602 series receiver. Kenwood turntable and Advent Legacy 3 speakers with 12 inch woofers. Put about 1500 bucks into it brand new in 94.

For the garage I have an early 80s Marantz receiver hooked up to pair of Advent Baby 3 speakers.

I work in IT, so Alexa or any smart speaker will never be in my house nor do I have anything to do with IoT tech. My printer is an 8 year old Cannon and I keep a Glock 17 nearby in case it makes a noise I don't recognize...

To an extent extent, they do. There was an article not too long ago about how the Amazon smart speaker program was designed as a loss leader to help push more sales through their website, but I wasn’t having the effect they were expecting.
