Battery light came on?

I checked volts with truck running and I got 12.05. with truck off I am getting 12.35. Belt is good, everything else looks fine. Interstate battery is 9 months old. I assume I need an alternator. I am having a little bit of a time figuring out what alternator I need. I have the "2 holes" on the case so I think its a 130 amp. Rockauto has a TYC 130 amp under the 2009 Ranger but not under the 2004 Ranger. Do you think the TYC will work for my truck? TIA.

I would use a Volt meter on the alternator wires first, could just be a blown fuse

Key off
Larger black/orange stripe wire should have your Battery voltage, 12.35
If not the Fusible link is blown

Unplug the 2 or 3 wire connector on the alternator
Key off
Yellow wire should have battery voltage, if not a different fusible link is blown

Key on/engine off
Light green wire should have battery voltage, if not fuse 9 and/or 10 in cab fuse box is blown

If all voltages are good then replace alternator

RonD. I just went out and tested the 3 wires exactly how you suggested to test them. I had B+ voltage at all of them(about 12.4 volts). My alternator from RA is suppose to be here Saturday. ill throw it in on Sunday and report back. Thanks for all the help. It's greatly appreciated!

The $100 TYC from RA showed up today and I popped it in. I took my time and it took exactly 1 hour, soups to nuts. I charged the battery up to 12.65V before the install. Truck is putting out 14.2V at idle. "Alternator" light is off. Thanks again!

That voltage should drop down to under 14volts after 10 minutes or so, other wise it will "cook" the battery, 13.6v is spec

Hmmm. I just checked on my alternator and it seems like it might be whining a little. I put my finger on it and I can only hold it in for less than a second or I'll get burnt. It seems pretty hot. It's putting out 14v a at idle, thoughts

14.0v at idle just after start up is normal, actually a little low, 14.5 to 14.9v is expected, then a drop to about 13.6v after a few minutes of Re-Charging the battery

Engine has been off a few minutes. Battery is 12.73v
