Banging noise

I have a 1994 ford ranger 3.0 the started making a banging noises for you are idling for more than 5 minutes does any one know what could be causing it

What kind of banging noise? Does it sound like a loose part rotating and hitting something? Or like some kind of detonation like backfiring? Or like some miniature alien trying to get out of your heating duct?

Either that or someone swapped the 3.0 for a 2.9.

Wow. Out of my original choices, that sounds most like the aliens trying to get out. Interesting. It's not in sync with engine rpm. Automatic transmission? I might lean toward a torque converter issue. But wait for some others to chime in.

It sounds similar to the a/c clutch continually trying to engage. I take it that you can hear it but not see it?

Yes i thats right but the weird part is that the noise seems to be come from around the thermostat area

Almost sounds like my old mazda when a timing chain guide broke and the chain would rythmicly slap the housing.

I thought the same until I found out it didn't have timing chain guides

Remove the serpentine drive belt & start the engine again...to rule out anything belt driven
