Not sure what exactly went wrong. I replaced the U bolts with new ones from Rock Auto. I tightened them evenly. Torqued to 75 foot pounds, and they bent really badly. I’m assuming it’s necessary to buy new bolts and replace them?
the plate is sideways. rotate it 90 degrees.
I'm not sure about new bolts. bolt stretch would be my bigger concern.
if you go to a local spring shop they take a straight rod, bend it, then cut new threads.
I agree with PJ. Your plates are oriented wrong. Rotate them 90 degrees in the horizontal plane. See photos below. I would recommend new u-bolts.you may not get these straightened and they have been stressed weirdly.
As opposed to what PJ said, most spring shops I have experienced have an assortment of u-bolt rods already threaded in different lengths. It's usually a rolled thread instead of a cut thread. Rolled threads are stronger. They just calculate the length of stock they need to make yours. Then put the stock in a bender.
