i have a 94 ranger with the manual tranny and electric trans. i just got done rebiulding the rear end in it and took it out muddin once and now the damn thing is jerking and making a grinding noise. but when the clutch is in it stops even when im moving. and most of the time when i get up to speed it stops or if i just lay off the gas it will stop. i have no clue what is going on any help is appreciated. thanks

I'd guess that your cv axle is messed up. Feel whether the oil is like motor oil or thick like axle grease. Oil means at least an axle seal and grease means the cv joint is a gonner. good luck :clapping:

the cv joint is for the 4x4 right? because i have manual hubs and they were free and i wasnt in 4wheel when it was doing this. or is there a cv joint in front and back too. also khooper you say feel the oil in the tranny??? thanks

cv joint would be up front only, the rear is a solid axle so there would be no joint, if it stops when you depress the clutch i would think it would be something with the clutch, your tires in back are still spinning which would still be turning the driveshaft in back

do you think it could be my tranny or transfer case? the clutch has less than 30000 miles on it so i cant see it being that.

Is it noisy when in netrual and not moving and the clutch out? And does it get worse if you rev the motor?

If so, most likely something in the Clutch or more likely, a bearing in the tranny, possibly the input shaft bearing..

If you can put the Transfer case in neutral, and let out the clutch, does the sound still exist? If so, its between the Clutch and the Tranny

Didn't quite get that test right.

Vehicle stopped, transmission in gear and clutch down. This immobilizes everything from the clutch disk backwards, and spins both the clutch bearings. With the transmission in neutral, almost all its spinning parts spin (except for the mainshaft), and it's not AT ALL unusual for a dying transmission to make nasty noises in neutral.

Just jack it up, put it in neutral, unbolt one end of the driveshaft and spin it at the transfer case and rear end. That splits your diagnosis in half right there. If it comes from the front start by checking out the transfer case and work your way forward. If it comes from the rear then either your rear end is shot or you may have some stuck/loose rear brake components.
