ok, 07 4x4, fx4 LII, torsen rear diff...

while driving, i noticed a strange ticking type noise, rather rapid, speed dependant, sounds like it's coming from the rear diff, but i can't be sure... starts at around 35mph, can hear it under accel and decel, louder on decel, sounds kinda like an echoy version of a subaru with a fartcan on it...

checked driveshaft for slop, u joints seem tight, didn't notice any pinion play, but wasn't really looking for it at the time...

thoughts?

also, it's been getting louder, not deafening, the motor will drown it out under heavy acceleration... started on tuesday

i'm going to bump this up again, because i really need to figure this noise out... i made a couple videos so you can hear the noise... the Decel video is the exact noise, but it makes it sound a lot louder than it actually is... the acceleration one is the proper volume.

irl, accel is quieter than decel, but not to the extreme these two videos make it seem...

It doesn't ring any bells for me.

Have you pulled the rear brake drums?

Or jacked up the rear end and turned wheels manually and then under power?

No I haven't had a chance yet, I'm staying in a place that does not allow any repairs on any vehicles, I actually got in trouble for parking a utility trailer on the driveway for 3 days...

Sent from somewhere naughty!

Sounds driveshaft or pinion-related to me... Maybe a chipped pinion tooth?

Do the Level II's have a one piece or two piece drive shaft? The decel sounds similar to my buddy's Chevy did when the carrier bearing ate it.

one piece driveshaft, i did crawl under the truck, the driveshaft has zero play up down, side to side, rotationally either direction or forward back... (nothing more than normal of course)

Dude, that's just the rear-end midget zipping his fly up.

Never heard of no midget in the rear-end??

But along that same line, it could be muffler bearing going out, or the rear ABS clock spring, but there was no mention of a "tock" noise just a "tick" so probably not clock spring related.
:)

I'd guess and this is JUST a guess. Broken tooth off the ring gear.

thank you to those who are actually trying to help, i'm tending to agree with you on the rear end or driveshaft related... it is DEFFINATELY somewhere between the output of the transmission and the wheels, someone mentioned an output shaft bearing on the trans/transfer case, which sounds to me like something i might be able to replace without removing from truck... (which would be AWESOME!)

special thanks to this wingnut for all of his "help" the only ford tech to comment and not useful at all *tsk tsk tsk*

i'm sorry, but who are you and why do you think you can just jump in and start trolling? might want to get a reputation for being helpful before starting with this^^^

I was joking about adsm08's midget in the rear-end, sorry you misunderstood the comment

Ok as an update on this, it turned out to be something in the rear end, still haven't fixed it yet, the rear diff fluid was 1.5l low(thanks ford for making sure it's full when you did every oil change I have gotten since I bought the truck, and since you replaced this diff!)

The shop that found it was low topped it up with gl-5 instead of syn 75-140 which the Torsen calls for. I'm not sure what the issue is, and don't want to pull the cover off just to figure out what parts I need, put it back together order parts...

So I think I'm just going to order everything, new 4.10 gears, a loc-rite new seals, new bearings, get a carrier for the loc-rite of course...

But, I have a totaled 2005 mustang on my lot, 4.6l, manual, so it should have a 3.55 31 spline trac-loc 8.8, and I should know by next week if it is ours or if someone is going to pick it up, if it's ours I can probably get a free diff!!
