Backwards Thinking

BTW, The idea of simplifying your truck with manual steering is a
nice idea, the problem is that the manual steering bx for the Rangers
is simply a complete POS that you don't want.

Cars have been made for some time with varible assist power steering. My 350z has it, My 1984 porsche 928 had it. Its nice to have the steering tighten up at 150 mph, it makes it much easier to drive at high speeds. It is more expensive and usually not used on cheaper vehicles. Google it you may be suprised. First post but couldn't resist awnsering this one

Yeah, just the other day at 150mph I was wishing the steering in my Ranger was tad firmer...:D

Sports cars and trucks have slightly different design requirements, welcome to TRS by the way a little late.

Even with my whiny moany pump it still steers ok with me, makes it sound like it is really doing something though.

The PS pump in my wifes Daewoo (I know, I know...) was going bad on us. It would be hard to turn the wheel unless you gave the engine some throttle, then the steering would be like normal. Well her car has the variable assist, so I got curious and unplugged the solenoid and took it for a spin. I agree with rock about the having the steering tighten up at speed - just not 150 in a Daewoo, lol. Anyways, it felt fine at idle again, but when going down the road at 50, the steering was way to easy to turn, and I felt if she tried to make an emergency maneuver at that speed, she would probably end up going off road, something even my Ranger doesn't really do (yet), so I plugged it back in. The reason I did this was to see if it would be an easy alternative to make parking lot life easier until I got a different pump, but thought it was too unsafe like that to leave, that and she's a good cook so the solenoid got plugged back in until I got the new pump.

Best steering in the world (heck, sense this went off the deep end already LOL) Our old 1992 probe GT had the power steering var. assist. The steering was easy and "Tight" at low speeds. Had a good feel to it. And the faster you went? The steering became 'staged' harder to turn. Felt like a flippen race car when going around tight corners at 50mph. Smooth as silk, and stuck to the ground like glue.
