The Ford service proceedure calls for REMOVING the Y-pipe when the tranmission is to be removed from these vehicles.

Yes it's POSSIBLE to do the job without removing the Y-pipe but if the body mounts are even the least little bit collapased you are basically screwed.

BTW, when parting out a vehicle ALWAYS save the catalytic converter!

I did it with pretty shitty body mounts. The trick is to find the narrowest portion of the bellhousing... what i mean is the bellhousings obviously not round and has a sweet spot where, when on its side, is shorter than the rest.

If after you unbolt the transmission you twist it around it will clear the y-pipe with little effort if you have a tranny jack. It expecially helps to try this is your exhaust manifold studs look like toothpicks and theres not much of a nut left.

I did it in my 91 explorer in the backyard with cinder blocks and one of those old gm emergency jacks. I mostly manhandled it out on my belly.

When we did my Ranger 6 years ago we left the y-pipe in, I don't remember it being a huge issue. We did pull the tailpipe but I know we left the Y, it may be a non Ford y-pipe too and that is why we got by with it, this thing is full of oddities like that.
