my rear axle is making a whirling noise when i get aroud 25 mph and gets louder as a accelerate. i have replace axle bearings and the bearing and seal in the diff behind the driveshaft flange. from what i have read it could be bad ring and pinion, carriage bearing or pinion bearing. should i keep replaceing bearing until i find the right one then replace the ring and pinion or should i dump the 7.5 and start my hunt for a 8.8 at my local junk yard. :dntknw: any advise would help

Go for the 8.8 it's alot stronger and more options available for it.

Just replace the whole axle. Definately the easiest way. And to replace the ring and pinion will cost more than a whole junkyard axle.

anyone what models the 8.8 came in. i looked at my local yard at broncos, explorers and rangers. none of them had the gear ratio i need. could a 8.8 out of a mustang or some other car work?? or does anyone know where i can get a 8.8 with 3.73 gear ratio

most explorers and rangers have 3.73's

The only 8.8 with 3.73's will probably come out another Ranger, at least for an easy, no-hassle swap. The difference is it will have 28 spline axles instead of 31. No big deal.
Check out the tech library here at TRS and you will find all kinds of info on
8.8's among many other models. Differences, measurements, specs, weak points, etc.
