auto trans problems in 99'

my friend has a 99, ranger 4.o auto 4x4.

never had problems with the tranny b4 this - you can crank the truck up & rev it up like normal in park & neutral but when you put it in any forward or revese gears & give it gas it bogs down horribly it wont shut off but sounds like it is about to.

we also have the shift motor off of the tcase so we could shift it into 4x4 manually but tranny problems started weeks after we did this

we unbolted the exhaust thinking it might be the cats but still no difference.
it has the correct amout of fluid & doesnt smell burnt

This happend while towing a trailer w/ a lawn mower on the interstate

i have no idea i dont know much bout slushboxes.

Sounds like either the torque converter has failed and piled up or converter clutch is stuck on. Pull the pan off and have a look. Possibly a valve body issue.

ok ill try that ,also it goes into gear fine & he took it to a local mechanic & they said it was something electrical w/ the engine
