How hard is it to make the swap?

Depends on how patient you are, and how much research you put into it.

Ive seen guys research something so much, they got it perfect on the 1st try, and Ive seen guys jump jump into something, and they are still working out bugs...5 years later!

One thing thats a must, collect all parts first and make sure you have everything. Sould be able to do it in a weekend.
Also use all NEW parts on the hydraulic clutch, especially slave cylinder.

(unless you dont mind pulling the tranny a week later to replace the used one, because you thought you could save a few bucks.)

As long as you have all the parts and tools needed to do the job, it can be done in 8 hours or less. I did my '97 Ranger in about 9 hours, but I didn't have all the tools needed and had to make a tool run.

I now have all the tools needed and know how to do it. I have all the parts and I am expecting to get it done in about 5 hours (but I am planning on 8).


Look in my How-To submission on the parts list. The parts list are the same for a 2wd and a 4wd.

It's not too bad as long as you plan your time well and get the right parts the first time.

My swap would have been done in a day if I had gotten the right Master Cylinder from the parts store.

I am right in the middle of the swap now, putting in the m5od after work tonight, forgot the damn pressure plate bolts in my parts swap, the hardest part is the clutch pedal and tryin to hump that tranny over the exhaust, btw i had to cut my crossmember off, PITA but eaisly fixable. All in all not a extreamly hard swap to do

Around how much should I expect it to cost?

If you can find deals (I did on eBay) for parts, then counting the transmission you will spend aroun $800-$900. I spent about $450 on mine since I sold some parts off my truck that would be in the way of the manual transmission.

Thats roughly half the cost of having a shop do it.

All shops near me wanted $1800+ to rebuild the 5R55E in my '97.

Around here, it was 2200 for a new tranny to be put in, but we know the owner well, so he gave us a good deal on another vehicle.
It would probably be more for a swap though.
