Auto hub maintenance

Hey all- I've got a 94 4x4 4.0 and replaced wheel bearings on it. Noticed while working on it the thrust spacers are missing. Looking inside the hub itself there's a grey goop in there. Looks kinda like aluminum filings mixed with bearing grease. Is it some kind of graphite grease? When rebuilding what kind of lube if any should I use on the mating parts? TIA-
