AR15 Uppers?

JMHO, but Del-Ton will give you a reliable weapon.

Don't get hung up on brand names. Until you get into really exotic stuff, all AR's are built using pretty much the same parts, so you can spend lots of money if you really want to buy a fancy engraving on your mag well, or spend less and get the same rifle without the big name.

Personally I prefer iron sights and 20" barrels - an A2 in other words.

If you buy short barrels and funny length gas systems, etc, you can expect some degree of reliability issues. Guns ALWAYS work best in the size, caliber, and configuration as originally designed.

Also, they do all use the same parts but it all depends who the mfg is to wether or not the said parts are crap, ok, gtg, or worth betting your life on. Now I do not have to rely on my weapon as a duty carry nor will I likely need it for a life or death situation but I still want something in my hands that goes bang when need it to.

You guys might be interested to hear that we have chinese AR15s up here from Norinco.
Except for being ugly finished, reports have said they're reliable.

Anyone know of a decent .243 upper that doesn't cost a bunch more than a whole .223 gun? Or better yet a whole gun?

.223 isn't quite enough and IMO .308 is too much... but I don't care to spend $1.5k+ for a deer rifle either.

I was trying to stay with a fairly common round, .243 is pretty common for deer hunting in my area (which is what I would want it for)

I basically know nothing about AR's except they are fun to shoot and pricey. I have noticed when I find them they are usually cataloged with the AR-10's. My brother's .223 is a riot but it has to be .24 or larger in Iowa for deer... but I could buy two .223's for one .243 AR or two bolt action Savages with factory scopes.

Also for you new to ARs chamber them in 5.56 not .223. That way you are not limited to just firing .223 out of it. 5.56 shoots both. .223 only shoots .223. There are some good deals to be had on bulk military 5.56 ammo out there.

That is how my brother's DPMS is, he shoots quite a bit of the 5.56. I guess I am not completly new to them but I know just enough to get in trouble

It seems once you get off the .223/5.56 path the prices instantly increase by half and then go up from there.

That 6.8 is intriguing, I will have to check into it more.

.243 would be on the AR-10 platform, at which point you may as well just go with .308. And you would be hard pressed to build one for under a grand.

I would take a serious look at the .300 AAC blackout for a deer round out of the AR-15 platform. The .300 AAC blackout is the ballistic equivalent to a .30-30(for hunting purposes), plus it uses standard AR-15 mags, and bolt, all you need is a .300 AAC blackout barrel(if you already have an AR-15).

Jester- well I can't remember lol. I'll look at it later. I go off duty this morning. I read a post on R-15 reviews last night and found a reply a guy got from bushmaster and he said its a hybrid chamber that can shoot both calibers. So I was thinking about gettin ahold of bushmaster and asking them too.

I dunno, I guess the more I look into them neither really stack up that great.

The 6.8 would be the ticket IMO if it was more common, ammo is rather pricy (about a buck a shot at best) and not that common, I imagine the mags are harder to find but after I got two or three that would be a non-issue. It sounds like the .300 BLK is overshadowing it and I am afraid if what little support it has going away in the future.

Then the .300 BLK, I haven't found a ballistic chart yet but I was wanting more than a 150yd gun like a 30-30/7.62x39... and it still uses rather freaky to find ammo (although if I get all the reloading stuff I could scalp my brother's .223/5.56 brass and make my own) Selection is better than the 6.8 but still doesn't have much for distance potential which is my biggest qualm with it.

I have nothing to start with so compatability with an AR-15 is a non-issue aside from selection.
